Problem: Acrobat fails to access the OCR service
Applicable to Windows
When you attempt to apply Optical Character Recognition (OCR) on a scanned page or an image, Acrobat may fail to access the OCR service due to low system memory, incomplete/corrupted files, unsupported formats, outdated software, or inadequate resources. Acrobat displays the following error: "Acrobat could not access the recognition service because: Unable to locate the paper capture recognition service."
To fix the error, try the following solutions in the order they appear below.

Copy all the files in the folder.

Go to the following locations and paste the copied files:
- C:\Program Files\Adobe\<Acrobat Version>\Acrobat\plug_ins\PaperCapture
- C:\Program Files\Adobe\<Acrobat Version>\Acrobat\plug_ins
Try running OCR using the Scan & OCR tool in Acrobat.
Note:
If Acrobat crashes during OCR even after following the above steps, delete the old files from the folders specified in Step 3. If the crash stops but the OCR issue remains, repeat the steps in solution 1.
Solution 2: Uninstall and reinstall Acrobat
You can sometimes resolve the error by uninstalling and reinstalling Acrobat.

Uninstall Acrobat from your computer:
- Open the Run command dialog by pressing the Windows and R keys.
- In the dialog, enter Control Panel and select OK.
- In the Control Panel, select Program and Features, and then select Acrobat from the list of installed programs.
- Select Uninstall and follow the prompts to uninstall Acrobat.

Reinstall the latest version of Acrobat on your computer:
- Go to the Acrobat Download and installation help page, and then follow the link to download and install your version of Acrobat.
