With Generative Remove, powered by Adobe Firefly generative AI, you can easily remove distractions and unwanted objects in a photo. Once you identify and highlight an object using the brush mask, Adobe Firefly automatically removes the object and the shadow around it, and generates a fill that blends with the rest of the frame.

  • To use Generative Remove, an internet connection is required. However, the Remove, Clone, and Heal tools can function offline.

Use Generative AI to remove distractions in Lightroom Classic

The Use Generative AI option in the Remove tool uses Adobe Firefly to effectively remove distractions in a photo. This new feature in Lightroom Classic is perfect for removing unwanted objects like vehicles, signboards, poles, and more, even on complex backgrounds.

  1. In the Develop module, select Remove   > Use Generative AI.

    Generative AI is highlighted
    Select Use Generative AI

    Caution

Make sure the mode is set to Remove.

  2. Brush over the object you want to remove. If Detect objects is selected, Lightroom Classic will also identify the shadow and reflections (if any) around the object and include it in the selection.

  3. In the Selected panel, you can use the following options to refine the selection:

    • Add - Add areas to the selection.
    • Subtract - Subtract areas from the selection.
    • Size - Adjust the brush size for a more accurate selection.

  4. Select Remove. Lightroom Classic will use Adobe Firefly to generate three different variations. You can select a variation or click Generate to create three new variations.

  5. Select the brush   icon to make further refinements or select   icon to delete the selection.

    Refine or Delete the selection

  6. Lightroom Classic uses Adobe Firefly to generate three different variations. Select the Arrows to cycle through the variations. You can also select the Generate button to develop three new variations.

    Tip

Select the three-dot menu beside the variations to Delete Variation or Report Variation

  7. Select as necessary:

    • Tool Overlay - This gives different options to view the mask overlay when you hover over an image.
    • Visualize Spots - This tool helps you visualize spots to make accurate selections. It shows a high-contrast overlay for certain scenarios. You can adjust the threshold using the amount slider.
Tip

  • If you want to skip adjustments, press Cmd (Mac) or Ctrl (Windows) while releasing the mouse after brushing a new area.
  • Press the Escape key to hide the spot outline or to deselect the spot without changing the tool overlay.

Detect Objects and Remove in Lightroom Classic

Detect Objects lets you detect an object within the roughly brushed area, helping you select precisely when you want to preserve as many details as possible from the scene. When you brush over an object, Lightroom Classic automatically selects the object and any shadows or reflections around it for the best results.

Note
  • Detect Objects can only be used with Content-Aware Remove and Generative Remove, and isn't available for Heal or Clone
  • Content-Aware Remove is used whenever the Use Generative AI checkbox is unchecked.
  • With Content-Aware Remove, press Cmd (Mac) or Ctrl (Windows) and drag an area on the image to sample an area.
  1. In the Develop module, select Remove    > Detect objects.

    Object Aware is highlighted
    Select Detect Objects checkbox.

  2. Roughly brush over the object you want to remove.  You can adjust the brush Size to make a precise selection.

    Note

By roughly brushing around the object of interest, the whole object would be selected, including any shadow or reflection.

  3. Once you have selected an object, you can use the refine controls to make the following selections:

    • Add - Add areas to the selection.
    • Subtract - Subtract areas from the selection.

You can adjust the brush Size in the selected panel and change the Overlay color.

  4. Select the Remove button in the selected panel.

  5. Generative AI powered by Adobe Firefly can be combined with Detect objects to analyze and automatically select the object and remove it for optimal results.

  6. Select Reset if you want to cancel the changes made.

Note

If you want to switch the current selection to a different mode, such as Generative Remove, Remove, Heal, or Clone, you can do so from the drop-down menu in the selected panel.
However, if the current selection already has Detect objects applied, you can only toggle between Generative Remove and Remove.

Share your feedback for the Generative AI feature by selecting the Provide Feedback button.
