Motion Graphics templates are a file type (.mogrt) that can be created in After Effects or Premiere Pro.

Motion Graphics templates give Premiere Pro editors the power of After Effects motion graphics, packaged up as templates with easy-to-use controls designed to be customized in Premiere Pro. 

New titles and graphics can also be created with Premiere Pro’s Type and Shape tools, then exported as a Motion Graphics template for future reuse or sharing. For information on creating graphics, see Create titles and motion graphics.

Premiere Pro ships with sample Motion Graphics templates that were created in After Effects and Premiere Pro.

You can also bring in Motion Graphics templates into Premiere Pro from the following locations:

  • Local Templates Folder
  • Creative Cloud Libraries
  • Adobe Stock
  • Your local folders

Install Motion Graphics templates

You can install a Motion Graphics template from your computer into the Local Templates folder in the Essential Graphics panel. Different than media, Motion Graphics templates don't live in the Project panel.

  1. Drag and drop one or multiple templates onto the Essential Graphics browser to install them into the Local Templates folder. Or you can install your MOGRTs by clicking on the install button in the lower right corner.

  2. Navigate to a folder where the Motion Graphics template is saved, and select Open.

    The template gets copied to the Local Templates Folder and is available in the Essential Graphics panel.

    Note:

    If a Motion Graphics template with the same name already exists, a dialog box appears prompting to either overwrite or cancel install of the Motion Graphics template.

    If you try to install a Motion Graphics template that is incompatible with the version of your project, Premiere Pro notifies you that the template is incompatible. A Motion graphics template is incompatible if it is created with a later version of After Effects.

The Local Templates folder

The Local Templates folder is the default folder when installing MOGRTs or licensing them from Adobe Stock through the Essential Graphics panel. The folder is located at:

  • macOS: username/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Common/Motion Graphics Templates/
  • Windows: root://Users/username/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Common/Motion Graphics Templates/
Note:

The Local Templates folder directory on macOS and the AppData directory on Windows are hidden directories. To view these files, unhide them on your system.

Organize Motion Graphics templates

Create a library

Instead of storing your templates in the Local Templates folder, you can add them to libraries to access them from any device or to collaborate with others.

To create a library, do the following:

  1. If the Libraries panel isn't available, select Windows > Libraries to open the Libraries panel.

  2. Click the hamburger icon next to Libraries, and select Create New Library from the pop-up list.

  3. A text box appears. Type in the new Library name, select Create, and a new Library is created.

Add a graphic to a library

You can add a Motion Graphics template to a library. To upload a MOGRT to your library, do the following:

  1. Drag and drop your libraries from the MOGRT view in the Essential Graphics panel onto the library in the locations view.

  2. You can also right-click a MOGRT from the Essential Graphics panel, and from the pop-up list, choose Copy to Library and select the library you’d like to add it to.

Browse and manage Motion Graphics templates

You can browse Motion Graphics templates in the Essential Graphics panel. The Essential Graphics panel browser lets you search and view your Motion Graphics templates as well as license-free and premium professionally curated Stock templates.

In My Templates view, you can do the following:

  • Enter a keyword in the search bar to quickly find exactly what you are looking for. Use the checkboxes as filters to view templates available locally, or across your Libraries.
  • Use hover scrub to preview animations for templates that include video thumbnails.
  • Sort Motion Graphics template by Recently Used or by Title.
  • Favorite a Motion Graphics template by clicking its star icon. Then, use the Favorites filter near the search bar to view your favorites quickly. 
  • Use the Info View to rename and add tags to your Motion Graphics templates for quick organization and searching. 
  • Change the size of your MOGRTs thumbnails.
Note:

You can also use the Libraries panel to bring in Motion Graphics templates from Adobe Stock or Creative Cloud Libraries into Premiere Pro. 

Browse Multiple Libraries

You can also browse templates from a single library or several libraries at the same time.

  • Selecting "All" displays all library results.
  • Switching to a single library shows templates from that library only.
  • You can choose several libraries at the same time. Choosing "All" undoes all the selections.

Manage Extra Folders

You can access custom folders that have been added as a path in Premiere Pro, or you can add new local paths. If there is no custom folder, you can only see the Local Templates Folder check box.

If you have added a custom folder as a path in Premiere Pro, you can find it in the Local list. To add new custom folders as paths, do the following:

  1. To add more paths, click the hamburger icon  next to the Essential Graphics panel.

  2. Select Manage Additional Folders from the pop-up list to open the Manage Additional Folders dialog box.

  3. To add a folder, select Add. Choose a file, and select Select Folder. The folder is added to the Manage Additional Folders dialog box.

  4. To remove a folder, select the folder and select Remove.

Drag and drop between locations

Move or copy your MOGRTs between different locations, just like navigating the file system on your operating system. Simply drag and drop to move MOGRTs between local folders on the same disk, or copy them if folders are on different disks. You can also copy MOGRTs from a local folder to a library.

When you select a MOGRT in the Essential Graphics panel, a blue outline will indicate its current location in the library so you can stay organized.

Adding your local folders from disk

To manage MOGRTs on disk, simply click the plus icon in the upper right corner of the Essential Graphics panel. You can navigate to a local folder, cloud drive, or shared network folder and add it to the My Templates browser. 

And find your custom local folders on disk with ease by right-clicking the location in the Essential Graphics panel and selecting Reveal in Finder/Explorer.

Note:

Adding a parent folder with MOGRTs in subfolders will not display the templates in the Essential Graphics panel, so make sure to add the actual folder with MOGRTs inside. 

Management of your MOGRT folders on disk is possible from within the Essential Graphics panel through a context menu that offers the options to Rename, Remove, and Reveal in Finder/Explorer. Renaming or removing a location in the Essential Graphics panel will not affect the folder on disk.  

Removing default templates

To assist users in getting started with MOGRTs in Premiere Pro, we provide a collection of default templates in the Local Templates Folder. We understand that some users prefer to focus solely on their own content. To remove these templates, simply follow these steps:  

  1. Right-click the Local Templates folder in the browser tree.

  2. Select Reveal in Finder/Explorer. 

  3. Delete all MOGRTs inside the Local Templates folder while retaining the .txt file (PrMogrtInstall13-0-0.txt).  

Should you ever wish to restore them in the future, just delete the .txt file, and the MOGRTs will regenerate themselves upon the next launch of Premiere Pro.  

Use Motion Graphics templates from Adobe Stock

Adobe Stock has thousands of professionally designed titles, lower thirds, transitions, and graphics to be used in Premiere Pro. To find and customize exactly the graphic you need, without switching  workspaces, browse Adobe Stock from the Essential Graphics panel.

You can find Motion Graphics templates in Adobe Stock from within Premiere Pro using the Essential Graphics panel or the Libraries panel.

Search Adobe Stock for Motion Graphics templates using the Essential Graphics panel

To search Adobe Stock for Motion Graphics templates using the Essential Graphics panel:

  1. In the Browse tab of the Essential Graphics panel, select Adobe Stock.

    The Graphics Templates panel is open showing various Motion Graphics templates from Adobe stock that you can use in your projects.
    Easily search and find a variety of Motion Graphics templates.

  2. Enter your search term and press Enter.

    Premiere Pro displays results from Stocks in the form of pages. The number of pages depends upon the number of total results and how many items can fit on the browser panel at given thumbnail slider size. If you resize the thumbnail slider or resize the view, the number of pages change depending on the new size.

    To navigate the Stock results, you can: 

    • Move to the next or previous page using the previous and next arrows.
    • Directly go to a particular page using the text edit field.

  3. License the Motion Graphics template by dragging it to your sequence, or use the License and Download icon.

  4. To learn more about a Motion Graphics template or to preview its animation, click the "i" icon beneath its thumbnail.

    You can also license the Motion Graphics template to your Local Templates folder using the License or Download icon from this view.

Add Motion Graphic templates to a Sequence

  1. To add a Motion Graphics template to your sequence, open Essential Graphics panel and click the Browse tab.

  2. Select the template that you want to use and drag it into a video track in your sequence.

  3. When you add a template to a sequence, Premiere Pro shows the media as offline until the template completes loading. If the templates that you added require fonts that have not been installed, you can resolve the fonts that are missing.

  4. After adding a template to your sequence, you can customize it in the Edit tab of the Essential Graphics panel to modify its appearance.

Customize your Motion Graphics template

To customize a template, select the template in your sequence. To change the template properties as desired, select Essential Graphics panel > Edit.

Depending on the type of Motion Graphics template, you can:

  • Choose color, source text, animation options from a range of choices provided to you by the template author.
  • Edit properties such as fonts, font size, faux styles, and much more
  • If the After Effects author has created templates with:
    • Groups of controls: You can open and close your groups, and use the properties within the group.
    • Controls for CSV (comma-separated value) and TSV (tab-separated value) spreadsheet data: You can change the data to the values you want.
    • Replaceable media: You can replace images or videos with your own media.

The template properties get updated as you change the controls.

To change the duration of a Motion Graphics template, select the template in the timeline, and adjust the red arrows at the sides to increase or decrease its playing time.

Note:

Motion Graphics templates from After Effects that have been used and customized in a Premiere Pro sequence can be replaced with an updated version of the template. Hold Alt/Option while you click drag-and-drop the updated template onto the existing one in your sequence. 

You can choose to have the template updated everywhere it was used in the project or limit the change to one instance. Where possible, your customizations are preserved.
