How to set up question slides with Adobe Captivate Classic

Multiple-choice question slides

Insert the multiple choice question slide (Quiz > Question Slide > Multiple Choice).

The default multiple choice question contains a placeholder question and two answer choices: A and B.

Double-click the placeholder question on stage to edit it and type your question.

To add more answer choices, edit the options in the Quiz panel in the Property Inspector.

If the question has more than one correct answer, choose Multiple Answers in the Quiz Properties panel.

Note:

Select Shuffle Answers (Quiz Properties panel) if you want the choices to appear in a different order each time the user returns to this question.
To specify the correct answer (s), click the radio button or the check boxes that correspond to the correct answer choices on stage.

In this case, the options are represented by radio buttons because the option Multiple Answers is disabled.

If the option is enabled, you see check-boxes instead of radio buttons.
Select Partial Score to assign partial scores to answers. Then, select the answer item, and specify the points you want to award in the Advanced Answer Option in Property Inspector.

Note:

You cannot set partial scores for multiple choice questions in question pools. For information on question pools, see Random question slides.

The variable, cpQuizInfoQuestionPartialScoreOn, indicates whether or not partial score is enabled for a question slide.
Specify other properties for the question slide in the Quiz Properties panel. For detailed information, see Quiz properties.

True-or-false question slides

Insert the true/false question slide (Quiz > Question Slide > True/False).

The default true-or-false question slide contains a placeholder question and the answer choices: True and False.

Double-click the placeholder question to edit it and type your question.
To establish the correct answer, click the correct answer—True or False—on stage. You can replace True and False with Yes and No if required.

Specify other properties for the question slide in the Quiz Properties panel. For detailed information, see Quiz properties.

Fill-in-the-blank question slides

Insert the fill-in-the-blank question slide (Quiz > Question Slide > Fill-In-The-Blank).

To specify the word or a phrase that users need to fill out, do one or all of the following:
- Select a word or phrase, and click Mark Blank in the Quiz Properties panel.
- Type your question in such a way that the answer (a word or a phrase) replaces the word ‘blank’.

To provide multiple options that your users can choose from:
1. Double click the word/phrase that is marked blank and then use the + button to add additional words/phrases that correctly fills in the blank.
2. Select Dropdown list instead of User Input.

4. Select Shuffle Answers if you want the choices to appear in a different order each time the user returns to this question.
Note:

You cannot change the question type once the question is created. Delete the slide and create another question type slide.

Short-answer question slides

Insert the short answ er question slide (Quiz > Question Slide > Short Answer).

On stage, double-click the placeholder question to replace it with your question.

Double-click inside the answer box that is just below the question. The Correct Entries box appears.

Type the sentence or the phrases that constitute correct answers. Use the + button to add multiple entries.

Insert a matching question slide (Quiz > Question Slide > Matching).

In Column 1, click the placeholder text ‘item’.

You see that a drop down list appears adjacent to the placeholder text. This list helps you specify the correct match for your questions. When your users answer the question, the answer is validated against the correct answer you specify in this list.

Double-click the placeholder text to replace it with the word or phrase to be matched.
In Column 2, double click ‘answer here’ to replace it with the answer choices.

Do not specify the correct match in Column 2; use the drop-down list to specify the correct match.

To add more rows to the columns, specify the required number in Column 1 and Column 2 fields in the Quiz Properties panel.

If you want the choices to appear in a different order each time the user returns to this question, choose Shuffle Column 1 in the Quiz Properties panel.

Hotspot question slides

Hotspot slides contain areas that the user must identify. For example, you can ask the user to identify company products from images displayed on the slide.

Answers to hotspot questions are correct if all the correct hotspots are clicked and none of the incorrect hotspots are clicked.

Insert a hotspot question slide (Quiz > Question Slide > Hot Spot).

The default hotspot slide contains placeholder text for the question and one hotspot area represented by a rectangle.

Specify the number of hotspot areas you require in the Quiz Properties panel.

You can add a maximum of 10 hotspot areas to a slide.

Add objects to the slide, for example, images, that you want to use as hotspots, and position the hotspot areas on these objects.
For each hotspot area, set the properties (such as, fill, stroke, correct answer) using the Property Inspector. For more information, see Set hot spot properties.
Do the following in the Quiz Properties panel:
- To disable mouse clicks on slide areas other than hotspots, click Allow Clicks Only On Hot Spots.
- To customize the animation that appears when users click a hotspot, click Browse, and select the animation.

Click the hotspot area and perform the following in the Property Inspector:

If clicking the hotspot is to be marked as a correct answer, (in the Properties panel of Property Inspector).
- Click Correct Answer if the hotspot is to be marked as a correct answer when users click it.
- Click Show Hand Cursor Over Hit Area to make the hand icon appear when the mouse is moved over the hotspot.

In the Fill section:
- To change the default border color, select the hotspot and then use the Stroke option.
Note:

The border color isn’t displayed if the frame width is set to zero.
- Enter a number or use the slider to set the thickness of the hotspot border.
- To change the default, use the Fill option.
Note:

The fill color isn’t displayed if the alpha is set to 0%. In the Color menu, specify a value for alpha. An alpha value of 0% creates an invisible (or transparent) fill; an alpha value of 100% creates an opaque fill.

To apply a shadow effect to hotspot area, edit the Shadow and Reflection properties.

In the Options tab, specify the exact size and position of the hotspot area.

To apply the properties to multiple hotspot areas on the slide and across the project, click Apply to all items of this type.

Sequence question slides

A sequence slide provides a list of items to be arranged in the correct order. For example, you can display a list of Polish kings and ask the user to arrange them chronologically.

Insert a sequence question slide (Quiz > Question Slide > Sequence).

Captivate Classic shuffles the answers in the list and displays them to users in random sequence.

In the Quiz Properties panel, specify the number of choices as Answers.

In the Answer Type list, specify the mode in which you want your users to arrange the answers in the list.

Rating scale (Likert) question slides

A rating scale slide displays a statement to which users specify their level of agreement.

For example, you can add the statement, “I learned valuable information from this presentation” and give the user a range of responses to choose from: disagree, somewhat disagree, am neutral, somewhat agree, or agree.

Rating scale questions are not graded and have no right or wrong answers. You can’t assign a point value or create branching on the basis of correctness. You can, however, decide what happens after the user completes the rating scale, such as continuing to the next slide, opening another project, or displaying a URL.

In the Quiz Properties panel, specify the number of answers and the number of rows of survey questions you require.

Complete the After Survey specification in the Action area of the Quiz Properties panel.

The After Survey area is the same as the If Correct Answer area as described in the general workflow.

Question widget slides

You can insert question widgets created as SWF files in Adobe Animate CC into Adobe Captivate Classic.

Developers creating the question widget in Flash must use a template code for efficient integration of the question widget into Adobe Captivate Classic. For more information, see Create question widgets.

Select Insert > Widget.
In the Open dialog box, select the question widget that you want to insert.
In the Widget Question dialog box, do the following:
1. In the Name field, enter a name for the widget.
2. In the Question field, enter the question.
3. Assign the points that should be awarded to the user who answers the question correctly.
Follow the instructions in the Widget Parameters section to create the question.

Quiz properties

For each question slide, perform the following in the Quiz panel in the Property Inspector:

- Toggle between Survey and Graded options using the Type list.
- (If type is Graded) Edit the number adjacent to Points (1 t0 100) to specify the score a user gets by answering a question correctly.
- To award negative points to wrong answers, specify the required points as Penalty. Do not include the minus sign while specifying this value. The variable, cpQuizInfoNegativepointsOnCurrentQuestionSlide, helps you know if a question is configured for negative points.
- Specify the style for numbering the answer choices in the Numbering list.

In the Captions section, specify the time limit and the captions to be included:

1	Displays a caption that lets users know that their answer is correct or incorrect.
2	Displays a caption that lets users know that they did not complete the question when they click Skip.
3	Lets you specify a time limit by when the users have to answer the question. You can specify the time in seconds (maximum 1800 seconds).
4	Lets you display a message to users that the time allotted for the question has expired.
5	Resets the slide to the initial view. It allows the user to start answering the questions on a slide by clearing the entered answers.
6	Takes the user to the previously attempted question slide.
7	Allows the user to skip the question slide and move to the next slide.

In the Action area, specify the number of attempts, failure levels, and the action to be taken after the users visit the slide and the last attempt.

In the Reporting area, specify whether you want the answers to be reported along with other parameters chosen in quiz preferences (Edit > Preferences > Quiz > Reporting).

Also, specify an Interaction ID. For more information, see Reporting options.

Quiz Review area

The Review area displays a preconfigured message to your users when they review the quiz using the Review Quiz button on the Quiz Results slide.

You can configure the message in quiz preferences (Edit > Preferences > Quiz > Settings > Question Review Messages).

On Success options

In the Action area of Quiz Properties panel, select the action that should take place after the user provides the correct answer from the On Success menu:

Continue	The movie moves to the next defined action.
Go to the previous slide	The previous slide is displayed to the user.
Go to the next slide	The movie moves to the next slide.
Go to the slide last visited	Similar to a back button. The movie moves to the previously viewed slide.
Jump to slide	The movie moves to the specified slide.
Open URL or file	A web browser opens with the specified web page if the user has internet connectivity. Alternatively, you could open a specified file for the user.
Open another project	Opens the specified Adobe Captivate Classic project.
Send e-mail to	A draft of the default e-mail editor opens with the e-mail address specified in the To field.
Execute JavaScript	Adobe Captivate Classic runs the specified JavaScript.
Execute Advanced Actions	Adobe Captivate Classic runs the selected Advanced Action
Play Audio	Adobe Captivate Classic plays the specified audio when the users provide correct answers to the questions. The audio plays until users click another interactive object, or navigate away from the slide. If users do not interact, the audio plays only for the duration of the specified audio file and does not loop.
Stop Triggered Audio	Adobe Captivate Classic stops the latest audio that was triggered by the Play Audio action.
Assign	Set a value to a variable.
Increment	The value of the variable is incremented accordingly.
Decrement	The value of the variable is decremented accordingly.
Pause	Pauses the project until another action resumes the project.
Exit	Exits the project.
Toggle	Switches an object from one state to another.
Show TOC	Displays the Table of Contents (TOC) of the project.
Show Playbar	Displays the project playbar.
Hide TOC	The TOC remains concealed throughout the project.
Hide Playbar	The playbar remains concealed throughout the project.
Lock TOC	Freezes the TOC so that you cannot click any item on the TOC during the project.
Unlock TOC	Re-enables the TOC navigability.

Last attempt options

In the Action area of Quiz Properties panel, specify the following:

Attempts

Select the number of times the user can attempt the question. After this number of attempts, the action you select from the Action pop-up menu occurs.

Infinite

The user can attempt the question any number of times.

Failure Levels

Specify the number of attempts for which the incorrect message is displayed. For example, if the level is set to 2, the error message is displayed for the first two attempts.

Last Attempt

The options are the same as for the If Correct Answer area.

Retry Message

Display a message when the user supplies an incorrect answer but there are remaining attempts available. This option is disabled if failure levels have been set.

In the Options area if Quiz Properties panel, specify the following:

Show Incomplete Message

Select Incomplete to display a message (for example, “Please select an answer before continuing.”) when the user doesn’t supply an answer. This option is disabled if you have chosen the Drag Drop option. On stage, edit the dummy text to specify the appropriate message.

Show Timeout Message

Select Timeout Caption to display a timeout message when the user fails to answer the question in the specified time. On stage, edit the dummy text to specify the appropriate message.

Reporting options

Use the Reporting area of the Quiz panel to specify the reporting options.

Report Answers

Keep a quiz score.

Note:

Interactive details like interaction ID, objective ID, and interaction type are not sent to the learning management system (LMS) if this option is not selected. However, details of the quiz, such as the total score, result, and quiz state, are still sent to the LMS.

If you want the Adobe Captivate Classic project (SWF file) to send tracking information to your LMS, enter the interaction ID specified by your LMS.

Answer area properties

Name

Enter a unique name for the answer area.

Note:

Although you can provide a name, the answer area is not available in Advanced Actions.

Style

Select a style for the answer area. To define a new style, select Edit > Object Style Manager. For more information on object styles, see Object style.

Fill & Stroke

Use this accordion to specify the fill and stroke properties for the answer area.

Fill

Click to fill the answer area with a color and type the transparency (in percentage) in the adjacent field. You can also choose a gradient fill or a texture fill. See Apply gradient fills and Apply texture fills for more information.

Stroke

Click to fill the stroke with a color. Use the Width slider to specify the width of the stroke line. Choose a style for the Stroke line from the Style list.

Corner Radius

Specify how much rounded you want the corners of the answer area to be.

Transform

Use this section to define the exact size or location of the answer area in terms of pixels. You can also specify the rotation of the answer area in this section.

Position of the text entry box on the Y-axis.

Width of the text entry box.

Height of the text entry box.

Constrain Proportions

Maintains the height-to-width ratio of the text entry box when you resize it.
