Work with a dynamic toolbar in the Contextual Task Bar in Photoshop and select relevant options and tools based on your selected tool or active feature.

Try out the latest features and enhancements.

Update Photoshop

The Contextual Task Bar in Photoshop is a floating dynamic menu that appears depending on your active tool or current selection. It's designed to give quick access to relevant options without the need for navigating across multiple panels and menus.

The Contextual Task Bar can be docked, floated, or hidden according to workflow preferences, and the options change depending on the active tool.

Note:

Contextual Task Bar is turned on by default and you need to select Window > Contextual Task Bar to turn it off.

Make selections

Make a selection and use the Contextual Task Bar to perform the following functions:

Refine a selection
Create a mask.
Fill a selected area with a solid color, gradient, or pattern.
Remove objects or areas with the Remove button.

You can also use Generative Fill to fill the selected area with generated content.

Remove button

Currently available in the Photoshop (beta) desktop app

Select Remove ( ) from the Contextual Task Bar to create a new layer that contains the replaced content in the Layers panel. Depending on the qualities of the selected and surrounding area, the new result may be generative AI content.

Select Remove Tool from the Tools panel to remove unwanted people, wires, and objects, and repair imperfections and blemishes.

Note:

Generative credits will not be charged for using the Remove button or the Remove Tool.

Remove button is now available in the Contextual Task Bar for selected objects

Gradients

Select the Gradient tool to access the Contextual Task Bar and perform the following functions:

Select, switch/toggle gradient Presets.
Select, change, switch, toggle, edit gradient type.
Reverse gradient preset color.
Change color and/or opacity.

Shapes

Select the Shape tool to access the Contextual Task Bar and perform the following functions:

Select Fill color.
Change Stroke color and width.
Manage Stroke Options.

Transform

Select command (macOS) / control (Windows) + T to initiate a transform workflow and use the Contextual Task Bar to perform the following functions:

Rotate objects clockwise and counterclockwise on the canvas.
Flip the image horizontally and vertically.

Import or generate an image

On a blank canvas, select Import image to open a document or Firefly-powered Generate image to generate images.

Type

Select the Type tool to draw a text box and use the Contextual Task Bar that appears to perform the following functions:

Select from installed fonts.
Adjust the font size.
Change text color.
Align the text.
Switch between bold, italics, or underline.

Crop

Select the Crop tool and then the Contextual Task Bar to perform the following functions:

Use Generative Expand, for which you need to drag the canvas to expand.
Straighten and adjust the ratio.

Mask

After creating a mask from a selection in the Select and Mask workspace, use the Contextual Task Bar to perform the following functions:

Refine your mask by adding or subtracting from your masked area.
View mode options.
Modify options for density and feather.

More options menu

Work with additional options listed in the three-dot icon ( ) of the Contextual Task Bar:

Hide the bar.
Reset the bar position.
Pin bar position.

These actions are applied to all bars, so a pinned bar will remain pinned for future bars in your workflow, and hiding a bar will keep all bars hidden until reopened.
