Learn how to edit PDFs by converting them into InDesign documents.
Need to edit some text or modify the layout of a PDF? You can now convert PDFs to InDesign documents while maintaining document fidelity in InDesign.
- Ensure you're connected to the internet and logged in to your Adobe account to convert PDFs to InDesign files.
- It is available only in English (North America) and English (International) languages.

Select File > Open. You can also drag and drop PDFs into InDesign.

Select a PDF, and edit the text and layout per your requirements.
Points to note
- Open multiple PDFs from any source (e.g., PDFs created from Illustrator, Photoshop, Express, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Apple Numbers, Canva, etc.)
- Converted PDFs now support strikethrough, superscript and subscript, baseline shift, underline, tables, special characters, hyperlinks, nested ordered and unordered lists, spot colors, and gradients.
- Improved alert dialog when unsupported, digitally signed, or password-protected PDF files are opened.
- Superscript & Subscript are now visually correct and editable in most cases.
- Table feature now supports basic bullets and numbering, colored styles.
- Paragraph and Character Styles are now created as part of PDF to Indd document conversion. (InDesign will not create Paragraph and Character Styles if, during the PDF conversion process, it detects that the number of unique styles in the document exceeds 80.)

Limitations and Known issues
- InDesign isn't able to convert PDF files that are corrupted or malformed in any manner, and created from unreliable sources.
- Kerning, Tracking, Leading, and Alignment are not completely supported.
- Advanced Bullets & Numbered lists (having different colors or styles) are not supported.
- Advanced Table Features (e.g., tables with different borders and variations, and advanced Bullets and numbers) are not supported.
- Grouping of paragraphs into a single text frame isn't supported.
- You can convert PDF file less than 100 MB with a maximum page count of 400.
