Learn to apply effects to clips in the timeline. Additionally, learn how to enable, disable, remove, and copy and paste clip effects in Premiere Elements.

Apply and preview effects

When you apply an effect to a clip, it's set to default values and active for its duration. After you apply an effect, you can adjust its properties using the Effect Controls in Premiere Elements 2025. You can make an effect start and stop at specific times or adjust the effect's values over time by using keyframes.

You can apply multiple effects to a clip and the same effect numerous times to the same clip with different settings. Keep in mind, however, that the more effects you add, the more time it takes to render the final movie. If you decide an effect isn't suitable for your project, you can easily delete it in the Effect Controls in Premiere Elements 2025.

Apply and preview a video effect

  1. Select Effects on the Action bar to open the Effects panel.

  2. Select the effect you want to apply. To locate an effect:

    1. Select an effect category from the drop-down list and the select the desired effect under the category.
    2. Type the name of the effect in the search box.

  3. Select a clip or multiple clips in the Quick view sceneline or the Advanced view timeline.

  4. Drag the effect to the clip in the Quick view sceneline, Advanced view timeline.

  5. Select the Play button in the Monitor panel to preview the clip with the effect applied.

  6. (Optional) Use the Effect Controls in Premiere Elements 2025 panel to adjust the settings of the effect.

Effects in Premiere Elements 2025 cannot be dragged and dropped on the program monitor

Apply an audio effect

  1. Select Effects on the Action bar to open the Effects panel.

  2. Select the audio effect you want to apply. To locate an audio effect, choose the Audio Effects category from the drop-down menu. Alternatively, type the effect name in the search box.

  3. Select a clip or multiple clips in the Advanced view timeline.

  4. Drag the audio effect to the clip’s soundtrack in the Advanced view timeline.

  5. To preview the audio effect, double-click the clip in the Project Assets panel and select the Play button in the Preview window.

    Note

    Audio playback controls are available only if the selected clip contains audio.

  6. To adjust the settings, expand the effect in the Effect Controls panel, and edit the settings based on your requirements.

    Note

    Each audio effect includes a bypass option that lets you turn the effect on or off as specified by the keyframes that you set.

Copy and paste effects

You can copy and paste one or more effects from one clip (source clip) to another (target clip), or copy all effect values (including keyframes for effects) from one clip to another.

If the effect includes keyframes, the keyframes appear at comparable positions in the target clip, starting at the beginning of the clip.

Copy and paste specific effects

  1. In the Advanced view timeline, select the clip that contains the effect you want to copy.

  2. Select the Applied Effects button to open the Applied Effects panel.

  3. Select the effects you want to copy. (Shift‑click or Ctrl‑click/Cmd-click to select multiple effects.)

  4. Select Edit > Copy.

  5. In the Advanced view timeline, select the clips you want to receive the copied effects.

    Note

    To select non-consecutive clips, Shift-click each clip. To select consecutive clips, select in the Project Assets panel and drag a marquee around the selected clips.

  6. Select the Applied Effects panel to make it active.

  7. Select Edit > Paste.

    You can also access the Edit > Copy And Edit > Paste commands by right-click/ctrl-click.

Copy and paste all effects

  1. In the Advanced view timeline, select the clip that contains the effects you want to copy.

  2. Select Edit > Copy. This copies all the clip attributes.

  3. In the Advanced view timeline, select the clips you want to receive the copied effects.

  4. Select Edit > Paste Attributes in Premiere Elements 2025 This pastes all the attributes of the first clip to the second.

    Note

    You can also access the Edit > Copy and Edit > Paste Attributes commands by right-click/ctrl-click. For Premiere Elements 2024, select Edit > Paste Effects and Adjustments.

View keyframes in copied effects

If the target clip is shorter than the source clip, keyframes are pasted beyond the target clip’s Out point.

  1. To view the keyframes, select the clip in the Advanced view timeline and do one of the following:

    • If the target clip has been trimmed, move the target clip’s Outpoint to a time later than the keyframe’s placement.

Remove an effect

  1. In the Quick view sceneline or the Advanced view timeline, select the clip containing the effect that you want to delete.

  2. In the Applied Effects panel, select the effect and then select the Trash bin.

Remove all effects

  1. In the Quick view sceneline or the Advanced view timeline, select the clip whose effect you want to remove. To select multiple clips, shift-click each clip.

  2. Right-click/ctrl-click one of the selected clips.

  3. Select Remove Attributes. The sub-options in the dialog are Video Attributes, Audio Attributes, and Effects, which are part of both sets.

  4. Select one of the following options:

    • Audio Effects

    • Video Effects

    • All Effects

     

Temporarily disable an effect in a clip

You can disable a video or audio effect so that you can preview the movie without the effect applied.

  1. Select a clip to preview in the Quick view sceneline or the Advanced view timeline.

  2. Select Applied Effects to display the Applied Effects panel.

  3. Click the eye icon next to the effect. To disable or enable all the effects on a clip, hold down Alt as you click an eye icon.

View the effects applied to a clip

All clips in the Quick view sceneline or the Advanced view timeline automatically have the fixed effects (Motion, Opacity, Volume, and Balance) applied to them. These fixed effects appear in the clip instance in the Advanced view timeline and in the Applied Effects panel. All of the standard effects that you add to a clip appear in the order in which you add them.

  1. Select the clip in the Quick view sceneline or the Advanced view timeline.

  2. Select Applied Effects to open the Applied Effects panel.

    Note

     

    The Effect Controls panel does not display effects if multiple clips are selected in the Advanced view timeline.
