How to Modify Materials in Substance 3D Viewer (beta)

This guide will walk you through modifying materials in Substance 3D Viewer (beta). Viewer makes it easy to adjust 3D models no matter your experience level with 3D content. If you don't have your own 3D model, you can follow along using the camera model available when you open Viewer at the top of the Welcome screen or by downloading the headphone 3D model linked below.

What you'll need:
  1. Import and prepare your scene

    1. Open Viewer
    2. Open your model:
      • On the Viewer home screen, use Open file and navigate to your model.
      • Drag and drop your file on the Viewer window.
    3. Use your mouse or trackpad to adjust the camera angle and position your model in the Viewport.
    4. Open the Environment panel from the left bar, or use keyboard shortcut E. Adjust Light presets, Brightness, Light rotation, and more to control lighting in your scene.
  2. Access the material editor

    1. Select the Appearance menu on the left menu or use keyboard shortcut G.
    2. The Appearance panel shows which materials are applied to the different parts of your model.
  3. Select a material to modify

    1. In the Viewport, click directly on the part of the model you want to change.
      1. If using the camera model, try selecting the lens ring or black body.
      2. If using the headphones model, select the ear cushions or headband.
    2. The material properties for the selected part will now be displayed.
  4. Adjust the material properties

    Understanding Physically-Based (PBR) Materials
    • PBR (Physically Based Rendering) materials are made of a collection of channels, where each channel controls a physical property that changes how a surface reacts to light.
    • We will focus on the Base color channel which changes what color the surface appears to be, and the Roughness channel, which changes how shiny or matte the surface appears.

    Change the base color

    1. Locate the Base Color parameter in the Appearance panel to the left.
    2. Click the color square next to it.
    3. If a texture map is applied, click Delete to remove it.
    4. Click the color square again to manually select a new color.
    5. Use the color picker to match existing elements in your design (e.g., branding colors).

    Change the base color

    1. Find the Roughness parameter in the material settings.
    2. Use the Roughness slider:
      • Move the slider right to make the surface more matte or left to give the surface more of a shine.
  5. Finalizing your changes

    1. Rotate your model to check how the material reacts to lighting and reflections.
    2. Adjust other parameters if needed to fine-tune the look.
    3. Once satisfied, save your project and use the “Snapshot” or “Export an Image” to export the image and continue working with your 3D scene in Photoshop.
