Import & export formats
Adobe Substance 3D Stager can import models, materials, images, and lights in a variety of formats.

Working with USD
Universal Scene Description (USD) is a definition and format developed by Pixar to describe 3D data. As an open-sourced format, it's gained popularity through the 3D industry with support in Blender, Maya, Unreal Engine, Houdini, and many more tools, and is even the native file format for NVIDIA Omniverse. Substance 3D Stager can import USD files, and can also export data into USD format files as well. We will continue to invest in USD to make the exchange of data between Adobe and other industry standard tools seamless!
Supported Features
- Import the camera's backplate.
- Import ground plane.
- Export ASM and USDPreviewSurface by default.
- Import ASM.
- Improve importing USD PreviewSurface.
- Import UsdLuxRectLight, UsdLuxSphereLight , UsdLuxDistantLight.
- Import UpAxis metadata and update to Y-up with auto-rotating content.
- Import/Export texture transform.
- Import render output resolution.
- Export selected Camera only.
- Improve USDZ import.
- Fixed missing textures.
- Fixed the file path with special characters causing the export failure.
- Fixed IBL is not imported/exported when the raytracing is enabled.
Unsupported Features
- Unable to import and export USD primitives.
- Unable to import and export animation.
- Unable to import and export Triplanar projection.
- Unable to import and export background color.
- Unable to import and export DOF.
Known issues
- Since the schemas in USD and Stager do not perfectly match, the round tripping of shading and lighting can be destructive.
- Import/Export USDPreviewSurface.
- Export Sunlight.
- Export IBL/Shapelight (IBLs are baked into a single texture. Same behavior with glTF).
- Import/Export UsdLuxRectLight, UsdLuxSphereLight , UsdLuxDistantLight.
- The location and direction of the lights should be correct, but the light properties evaluation can be different.

- Import/Export USDPreviewSurface.
- Incomplete pivot support. Unable to export pivot. Able to import pivot but it's baked in the transform.
- Since Stager display names are not necessarily unique whereas USD prim names are, exported USD prim names are different when imported into Stager in the round tripping.
- Export decal as a baked texture.
- USD groundplane and backplate will be replaced by USD schema (currently it's metadata).
