Learn how to gather visual elements for your mood board and arrange them in Firefly Boards (Beta).

Firefly Boards (beta) helps you streamline the creative process, making it easier to visualize, refine, and present your ideas with a generative-first approach to mood boarding. It allows you to quickly explore various artistic directions, blend images, transform parts of an asset, and remix styles, backgrounds, and other elements.

Gather visual elements

You can begin your project by collecting mood boarding elements that align with your vision and theme, such as images, color swatches, and text. Firefly Boards allows you to import and use your own or stock assets and newly generated assets using generative AI models, including Adobe Firefly.

Add images to the canvas

  1. On the Firefly homepage, select Firefly Boards.

  2. On the Firefly Boards page, select Create new.

  3. To import an image, use the Import    option to add it to the canvas.

  4. To search and add images on Adobe Stock, select the   icon in the right toolbar and use the Search panel to browse the results.

  5. To generate an image with a text prompt and add it to the canvas, select the prompt bar at the bottom of the page.

    The prompt bar is open with the prompt 'a white camellia' added. You have options to sample from the canvas, choose a different image model, specify the aspect ratio, and generate an image.

  6. Add a text description in the prompt bar. You can also select from the available Firefly and Non-Firefly models and aspect ratio for the generated images.

    Along with Firefly models, you can also use third-party image models to generate images for your mood board.

    If there is an image in the canvas you want to use as a reference, you can select the Sample from canvas option and use the following options:

    • Use as style referencesAlign the style of the generated images with the selected image from the canvas.
    • Use as composition reference: Guide the layout and structure of generated images to the selected image.
    • Extract sub-prompt: List the auto-generated text prompts based on the selected image and choose one to add directly to the text prompt.
    The image in the canvas is selected, and the 'Sample from canvas' option is used to choose from various references and sample prompts.
    Use the Sample from canvas option to explore image variations, using the existing image in the canvas as a reference.

    Tip:

    If you want to adjust or change the generation settings, such as reference images or sub-prompts, before generation, you can use the Generation settings  option next to the Generate button.

  7. Select Generate to generate image variations. The thumbnails of these variations will appear in the film strip.

  8. Drag the generated image and drop it onto the canvas. To select and move multiple images, hold the Shift key while dragging and dropping them onto the canvas.

  9. Once you add the image to the canvas, when you select it, you have the following editing and adjustment options:

    • Prompt: Open the prompt bar showing the prompt and generation settings used.
    • Edit: Use the Generative fill and Generative expand capabilities to edit the image.
    • Remove background: Remove the background of the image.
    • Download: Download the image to your local device.
    • Open in: Open the image in Photoshop on the web or Adobe Express.
    • Find similar inspiration: Opens the Search panel and displays similar images available on Adobe Stock.
    • Cut, copy, or duplicate the image or paste any copied elements.
    • Rearrange, delete, and flip the image.
    An image is selected in the canvas, and a list of editing and arrangement options are available to choose from.
    Use the editing and adjustment options to further refine the added image and position it as desired.

  10. If you select two or more images in the canvas, you activate the following additional options:

    • Remix: Use the selected images as an inspiration to auto-compose a text prompt and generate a new set of remixed image variations.
    • Arrange: Arrange the selected images in rows, columns, or a mosaic pattern layout.
    • Align: Align the selected images along a specified axis and distribute them horizontally or vertically.
    A few images are selected on the canvas, and the Remix option is chosen. The remixed prompt appears in the prompt bar, offering the option to generate image variations.

  11. Use the Text   option in the left toolbar to activate the text cursor, select anywhere within the canvas where you want to add the text field, and start typing.

    Use the text editing options to modify the text or select the Properties   icon to activate the Properties panel, where you can modify text attributes like blend mode, opacity, and color, as well as text box characteristics such as size, position, and rotation.

  12. Select the Shape option from the left toolbar to access the available shapes - Rectangle, Ellipse, Line, and Arrow. Use the cursor to draw the shape and the available settings to adjust its properties.

    Use the Properties    icon to activate the Properties panel, where you can modify shape attributes like blend mode, opacity, and color, as well as other settings such as size, position, and rotation.

Generate variations or remix images

The ability to remix images by combining visual elements from existing images allows you to create multiple unique versions, each featuring a blend of styles from the referenced images. This approach enables you to experiment with various elements and produce visuals that align with your mood boarding goals.

  1. Select multiple images from the canvas.

  2. Select the Remix button that appears above the selection.

    The images are selected in the canvas, and there is an option to remix and generate a new set of image variations.
    Use the Remix option to create a unique set of image variations from the existing images in the canvas.

  3. The remixed prompt appears in the prompt bar. Select Generate to combine them and generate a new set of variations.

    Use the Remix option to auto-populate a text prompt, which can be edited or used to create a unique set of image variations.

Use style references

Using an image as a style reference in Firefly Boards helps you maintain a consistent look and add specific features when creating different versions of images for your mood board. This is helpful if you want to generate new images that fit together, creating a cohesive visual theme.

  1. In the prompt bar, select the eyedropper   icon and select the image on the canvas that you want to use as your style reference.

  2. Select the Use as style reference option from the context menu.

    Match the style of the generated images with the selected image from the canvas.

  3. The thumbnail of the selected image reflects as Style reference in the prompt bar.

  4. Select Generate to combine the prompt and the style reference image to generate a new set of variations.

Use composition references

When you use a composition reference to generate image variations, the structure of the reference image is maintained, including the arrangement of visual elements and subjects within the frame. This approach can be beneficial in achieving consistency in the new images, helping you align with the desired aesthetic for your mood board.

  1. In the prompt bar, select the Sample from canvas option and then the image on the canvas that you want to use as a composition reference.

  2. Select the Use as composition reference option from the context menu.

    Match the composition of the generated images with the selected image from the canvas.

  3. The thumbnail of the selected image reflects as Composition reference in the prompt bar.

  4. Select Generate to combine the prompt and the composition reference image to generate a new set of variations.

Extract sub-prompts

When you select an image from the canvas, you'll see a list of auto-generated text prompts based on the image's content. These prompts offer descriptions or ideas related to the image. You can review and choose the prompt that best fits your needs. Once selected, the prompt will be added directly to the prompt bar as a sub-prompt, with an option to add additional text descriptions, making it easier to generate images.

  1. In the prompt bar, select the Sample from canvas button and then the image on the canvas.

  2. The context menu lists a set of sub-prompts. Select one or multiple to add them directly to the prompt bar.

  3. Add additional text description in the prompt bar if needed and select Generate.

Arrange and refine the mood board

Once you have gathered the visual elements, you can create an artboard and start arranging, editing, and composing your mood board.

  1. Select the Artboard    icon from the left toolbar.

  2. Draw the artboard on the canvas by using the click-drag action.

    The Artboard icon is selected and a new artboard is added to the canvas.
    Use the Artboard option to create one or multiple artboards and start organizing your design elements.

  3. You can use the Properties panel to modify the artboard's attributes, such as blend mode, opacity, and color, as well as other characteristics, such as size, position, and rotation.

  4. Drag and drop the assets inside the artboard and arrange it to suit your theme and composition.

  5. If you've already arranged the visual elements of your mood board when you imported or added them, you can select them all, select the   option, and then Artboard from selection.
