Frequently asked questions
If you're opening a project created in Premiere Pro (version 25.2) into an earlier version (v25.1 or 25.0), you'll see a warning indicating that the project contains newer features. To take full advantage of the updated color grading capabilities, it's strongly recommended that you upgrade Premiere Pro to the most recent version before making any changes to the color management or color adjustments. You can choose to open the project to review its contents, and backwards compatibility will enable you to see the correct color.
There may be inconsistencies in color grading and visual appearance due to updated features not available in the older version of Premiere Pro. Color management controls are disabled so that the project does not break, and you can open and make editorial changes to the project file in the newer version of Premiere Pro.
No. We’ve designed the system so that if you open a 25.2 project in an earlier version, you’ll see a visual preview of how it looks with the new color management settings, but the color management controls are locked and disabled. This prevents you from accidentally making changes that could break compatibility or degrade project integrity.
Always ensure that everyone on your team is working on the same version of Premiere Pro. If someone must work in an older version, they can preview the project, but shouldn’t modify sequences with color-managed clips. If possible, keep the 25.2 version as the source of truth and avoid editing in earlier builds.
If your project relied on specific manual adjustments, you may need to manually reset or adjust Lumetri Settings. Alternatively, using the Direct Rec.709 color management preset can help replicate the legacy appearance in some cases.
The updates can affect Team Projects, Premiere Pro Projects, and Productions. When opening newer projects in older versions of Premiere Pro, each of these project types might see discrepancies in how color grading is applied, so it’s important to review and adjust accordingly.
