Find the list of Generative Extend known issues, limitations and their workarounds.

Speech to Text transcription is unsupported for extended clips

Issue: Lack of transcription will prevent successful Text-Based Editing and captioning workflows.

Workaround: Ensure clips are transcribed before extending them with Generative Extend. To ensure all content is transcribed, it is recommended that you enable Automatic Transcription at the beginning of your project. This setting can be found in the Preferences under Media Analysis and Transcription.

Extended clips are excluded from Media Intelligence indexing and search

Issue: You cannot find an extended clip in a sequence by searching for the visual content of the clip.

Workaround: The original source clip in the project panel will show up in the results.

Clips with speed adjustments cannot be extended

Issue: Clips with speed adjustments cannot be extended; you'll receive the following warning “Generative Extend does not support clips with speed changes or time remapping.”

Workaround: Remove the speed adjustments and extend the 100% speed clip. Then re-apply the speed adjustment after extending the clip.

Generative Extend can only be applied to the beginning or the end of a clip

Issue: Generative Extend can only be applied to the beginning or the end of a clip, not both. You'll receive a warning, “Generative Extend can only be applied once.”

Workaround: If you need to extend both sides of a clip, make a blade edit in the middle of the clip first before doing any extensions. Then you can extend the beginning of the first segment and the end of the second. The edit in the middle will be invisible. If you need to extend the beginning or end after you have already extended one side, you can use render and replace. Render and Replace can be accessed by right-clicking on the clip in the timeline or from the Clip Menu.

Audio extensions don't support music

Issue: Extending an A/V clip that contains music will result in an incomplete audio track containing silence and a label that says “Can’t complete”. This includes music-only content as well as music being present in the background. You'll receive the following error “Generative Extend can't process your audio. Check that your audio clip doesn't contain music.” The icon of the extended clip in the project panel will show a question mark.

Workaround: If the audio portion is known to contain partial musical elements, we recommend unlinking the A/V pair by right-clicking and choosing “Unlink.” Then use Generative Extend on the video portion.  If the audio portion contains only music, consider using Remix to extend it after unlinking the A/V pair.

Markers on the original clip are lost after performing Generative Extend

Issue: When you perform Generative Extend, you lose the markers on the original clip.

Workaround: Re-apply the markers manually after using Generative Extend.

The Project Manager will not collect extension segments

Issue: The extension segments can't be collected by the Project Manager.

Workaround: Before using the Project Manager, use Render and Replace on each extended clip in the sequence. You can access Render and Replace by right-clicking on the clip in the timeline or from the Clip Menu.

User-entered logging metadata isn't transferred to the extending clip

Issue: User-entered logging metadata isn't transferred to the extending clip. These are fields such as Shot, Scene, Good Take, etc. Intrinsic metadata is maintained, like FPS, in-point, out-point, etc.

Workaround: The logging metadata of the original clip isn't altered. Sorting by name in the Project panel will show the extended clip just after the original. You can rely on the metadata fields from the original clip.

Exchange formats are not fully supported

Issue: The following exchange formats are not fully supported and are therefore not recommended: XML, AAF, EDL, OMF, and OTIO.

Workaround: Use Render and Replace on each extended clip in the sequence before exporting any exchange format. Render and Replace can be accessed by right-clicking on the clip in the timeline or from the Clip Menu.

Edit in Audition unsupported

Issue: Edit in Audition unsupported.

Workaround: Use Render and Replace on each extended clip in the sequence before sending it to Audition. Render and Replace can be accessed by right-clicking on the clip in the timeline or from the Clip Menu.

Replace with After Effects composition is unsupported

Issue: Replace with After Effects composition is unsupported.

Workaround: Use Render and Replace on each extended clip in the sequence before sending to After Effects. Render and Replace can be accessed by right-clicking on the clip in the timeline or from the Clip Menu.

Multichannel audio is unsupported

Issue: Multichannel audio is unsupported (more than stereo, 2 channels).

Workaround: Unlink the A/V pair before using Generative Extend and only extend the video portion. Turn off Linked Selection by pressing the Linked Selection   icon in the Sequence header or from the Sequence menu. Or disable linking on the A/V pair by choosing Unlink from the right-click menu or from the Clip Menu.

Multicam cannot be extended

Issue: Multicam cannot be extended. You'll receive the following warning. “Generative Extend does not support nested sequences. Try again with an audio or video clip."

Workaround: First flatten down to the selected angle. Right-click and choose Multicam > Flatten.

Timecode isn't maintained when extending a clip

Issue: Timecode isn't maintained when extending a clip. Extended clips will always be zero-based. The original clip isn't affected.

Workaround: Overlay the original clip above the extended one to find specific timecode moments.

iPhone HDR clips are unsupported

Issue: iPhone HDR clips are unsupported because Generative Extend does not support HDR.

Workaround: Work in a Rec709 sequence and then use Render and Replace to bake in the Rec709 conversion. First, ensure your sequence color space is set to Rec709. Select Sequence Menu > Sequence Settings  > Color  Management > Color Setup and select Direct Rec 709 (SDR). Premiere Pro’s built-in tone mapping will automatically convert all HDR content on the timeline from HDR to SDR. Then choose Render and Replace by right-clicking on the clip in the timeline or from the Clip Menu.

  • Modify clip properties are unavailable, including Audio Channels, Color, Interpret Footage, Timecode, and VR Properties. The Modify menu can be accessed by right-clicking on a clip in the project panel or from the Clip Menu. There are no workarounds. Generative Extend does not support any of these modification options.
  • Generate Again creates a new, different Projects panel item from the previous generation.
  • When you right-click on the AI-generated label and try to select Revert to Original, it's s greyed in the following instances:
    • When the extended clip has a negative speed applied to it.
    • When the original clip is no longer part of the project or deleted from the Projects panel.
    • If audio or video fails in an AV clip, then the icon of the Compound Clip in the Projects panel is always missing media.
  • When working in a Productions environment, duplicate project items will get added when adding to each project within the production. This is due to a lack of support for cross-project media referencing for extended clips. For each project where the extended segment is copied, it will be necessary to create a corresponding project item.
  • Source clip color space cannot be viewed or altered in the Lumetri Color panel.
