Gather visual elements

You can begin your project by collecting ideation and mood boarding elements that align with your vision and theme, such as images, videos, shapes, and text.

Add images to the canvas

On the Firefly homepage, select Ideate from the left panel.

If you already have a set of media files to add, select Upload files, or if you want to start from scratch, select Create a board.

On the Boards page, select New board

To import an image, use the Import    option to add it to the canvas.

To search and add images on Adobe Stock by selecting the   icon in the right toolbar and use the Search panel to browse the results. 

The Search option is active, displaying the keyword 'Iridescent' in the Search bar. A list of results is available for selection.
Search for images on Adobe Stock or find similar images to those already added to the canvas.

To generate an image with a text prompt and add it to the canvas, select Generate image at the bottom of the page.

Add a text description in the prompt bar. You can also select from the available Firefly and partner models, as well as Custom Models to generate images.

The Image Model dropdown menu is open, allowing selection between Firefly and Non-Firefly models, and setting the aspect ratio for generated images.
Along with Firefly models, you can also use partner models to generate images for your board.

If there is an image in the canvas you want to use as a reference, you can select the Sample from canvas   icon and use the following options:

Get a detailed description of the uploaded image in the canvas, which works like a great starting point for prompts.

Use as style references

Align the style of the generated images with the selected image from the canvas.

Use as composition reference

Guide the layout and structure of the generated images to match the selected image.

Extract sub-prompt

List the auto-generated text prompts based on the selected image and choose one or more to add directly to the text prompt.

If you want to adjust or change the generation settings, such as reference images or sub-prompts, before generation, you can use the Generation settings option.

Adjust the generation settings for the image, such as aspect ratio and content type, and select Generate.

The generated image variations appear as thumbnails in the filmstrip, allowing you to select and add them to the canvas.

Drag the generated image and drop it onto the canvas. To select and move multiple images, hold the Shift key while dragging and dropping them onto the canvas.

Once you add the image to the canvas and select it, you have the following editing and adjustment options:

Use the image to generate new image variations that maintain a similar style or composition, with subtle variations.

Edit

  • Generative fill: Remove, add, or expand image content using brushes and text prompts.
  • Generative expand: Change the image's aspect ratio or size and expand its contents.
  • Edit text in image: Edit text within any image while preserving the integrity of the original image.
  • Use partner models to further refine the image.

Convert

  • Image to video: Use the image as the first frame for video generation using Adobe and partner models.
  • Image to 3D: Convert the image to a 3D element and add it to the canvas.

Remove background

Remove the background of the image.

Crop

Crop the image by dragging the cropping handles, then use Generative expand to fill any empty space created.

Download the image to your local device.

  • Find similar inspirationOpen the Search panel and browse through similar images available on Adobe Stock.
  • Cut, copy, or duplicate the image, or paste any copied elements.
  • Rearrange, delete, and flip the image.
An image is selected in the canvas, and a list of editing and arrangement options are available to choose from.
Use the editing and adjustment options to further refine the added image and position it as desired.

If you select two or more images in the canvas, you activate the following additional options:

Use the selected images as an inspiration to generate a new set of remixed image variations.

Collect items

Gather selected visual elements, such as images, videos, shapes, and text, into a structured layout within an artboard.

Arrange

Automatically organize multiple selected elements into clean, visually balanced layouts:

  • Rows: Align elements in evenly spaced horizontal rows, maintaining equal spacing between items.
  • Columns: Organize elements into vertical columns with uniform spacing.
  • Mosaic: Create a visually balanced layout that accommodates elements of varying sizes, maintaining harmony and alignment.

Align

Line up selected elements relative to each other or the canvas.

  • Align left: Aligns all selected elements to the leftmost edge.
  • Align center: Centers all selected elements horizontally.
  • Align right: Aligns all elements to the rightmost edge.
  • Align top: Aligns elements to the topmost edge.
  • Align middle: Centers elements vertically.
  • Align bottom: Aligns elements to the bottommost edge.
  • Distribute horizontally: Evenly spaces elements across the horizontal axis.
  • Distribute vertically: Evenly spaces elements across the vertical axis.

Download the selected images to your local device.

  • Rearrange, delete, and flip the image.
A few images are selected on the canvas, and the Remix option is chosen. The remixed prompt appears in the prompt bar, offering the option to generate image variations.
Auto-compose a text prompt from selected images to generate a remixed new image variations.

Add videos to the canvas

To import a video, use the Import    option to add it to the canvas.

If you want to generate a video using Adobe and partner models, select Generate video at the bottom of the page.

Use the model selection option to select a video generation model.

Add a text description for the video generation.

You can also select the Sample from canvas   icon to use the following generation options and settings:

Get a detailed description of the image or video on the canvas and automatically add it to the prompt bar. This serves as a helpful starting point for drafting a prompt for video generation.

Use as first frame*

Use the selected image or video frame as the starting frame for video generation.

Use as last frame*

Use the selected image or video frame as the ending frame for video generation.

Use video*

Use the selected video as a composition reference to guide the video generation process.

Use as image reference*

Use the selected image or video frame as the starting frame for video generation, and customize the generated video by adding or editing elements.

Extract sub-prompt

List the auto-generated text prompts based on the selected image or video and choose one or more to add directly to the text prompt.

The generated video appears as a thumbnail in the filmstrip. Drag and drop it onto the canvas.

Once you add the video to the canvas, when you select it, you have the following editing and adjustment options:

Load

Load the prompt used to generate the video into the prompt bar, if the video was created within the current project.

Edit

Use one of the available video models to edit your video using text-based prompts.

Mute

Mute the video if it was generated with audio or if the uploaded video contains sound.

Repeat

Enable or disable video looping on the canvas.

Take snapshot

Take a snapshot of the current video frame, and add it to the canvas as an image.

Download

Download the video to your local device.

Select two or more videos on the canvas to arrange, align, or apply other editing actions.

Add shapes to the canvas

Select the Shapes option from the left panel of the canvas.

Choose a shape from the list of available options, then use your cursor to draw it on the canvas.

Tip

Hold Shift while drawing a shape to maintain its proportions. For example, to create a perfect circle or square.

Use the Properties    icon to activate the Properties panel, where you can modify shape attributes like blend mode, opacity, and color, as well as other settings such as size, position, and rotation.

A shape element is selected, with options to edit it available in both the context menu and the Properties panel.
Edit the shape added to the canvas using the context menu as well as the Properties panel.

When you select two or more shapes on the canvas, you can use the same arrange, align, and other editing actions available for visual elements like images or videos along with two additional shape-specific options.

Select a fill color for shapes such as rectangles or ellipses.

Border

Select a color for the border line and specify the stroke width.

Add text to the canvas

Select the Text option from the left panel of the canvas.

Place the cursor on the canvas where you want to insert the text.

Use the text formatting options that get activated to customize font style, size, color, alignment, and other text properties.

Use the Properties   icon to activate the Properties panel, where you can modify text attributes like blend mode, opacity, and color, as well as text box characteristics such as size, position, and rotation.

A text element is selected, with options to edit it available in both the context menu and the Properties panel.

Arrange and refine the board

Once you have gathered the visual elements, you can create an artboard and start arranging, editing, and composing your board.

Select the Artboard    icon from the left toolbar.

Draw the artboard on the canvas by using the click-drag action.

The Artboard icon is selected and a new artboard is added to the canvas.
Use the Artboard option to create one or multiple artboards and start organizing your design elements.

You can use the Properties panel to modify the artboard's attributes, such as blend mode, opacity, and color, as well as other characteristics, such as size, position, and rotation.

Drag and drop the assets inside the artboard and arrange it to suit your theme and composition.

If you've already arranged the visual elements of your board when you imported or added them, you can select them all, select the   option, and then Artboard from selection.

Images are selected on the canvas, and the option to create an artboard from the selection is selected.
Select multiple visual elements in the canvas and add them to a single artboard.
