Generate videos with transparent backgrounds

Last updated on Sep 24, 2025

Learn how to generate videos with transparent backgrounds and solid foreground elements using Text to video or Image to video features.

Transparency is key when working with videos that include multiple visual layers. By making parts of the top layers transparent, you can reveal the visuals underneath—allowing your content to blend seamlessly into different scenes or sit naturally over various backgrounds.

Firefly makes it easy to control transparency while generating videos. Whether you use a text prompt or combine it with a start or/and end frame image, you have the flexibility to generate videos with transparent backgrounds and solid foreground elements.

On the Firefly homepage, select Generate with transparent backgroundText to video or Image to video.

If you select Generate with transparent background, you’ll enter the module with the Firefly Video model selected and Transparent background already enabled.

If you selected Text to video or  Image to video, in the left panel, under the General settings section, select Firefly Video as the Model for video generation.

under the General settings section, Firefly Video is selected as the Model for video generation.
Select Firefly Video as the video model to generate a video with a transparent background.

Under the Advanced settings section, enable the Transparent background option.

Enable the Transparent background option to generate a video without any background.

When the Transparent background option is enabled, non-supported generation settings get hidden.

Select the resolution and aspect ratio for the generated video.

Frame per second is 24 FPS and the duration is 5 seconds by default.

If you'd like to use an image as the first frame to start your video or as the last frame to end it, upload it in the Frame section under First frame and Last frame, respectively.

The First frame image is added and there is a text prompt to generate a video.
Add PNG files with transparency as the first and last frames when generating images with a transparent background.

Note

Only PNG files with transparency are supported for the first and last frames when generating images with a transparent background.

Enter a text prompt in the prompt bar that describes the video you want to generate.

Once your video is generated, select the Background icon to explore the preset color backgrounds and preview how they look behind your video.

You have the following presets to choose from:

  • Transparent background
  • White background
  • Black background
  • Green background
  • Foreground only
  • Alpha mask only
In the preview section, you can choose how to view the video with a transparent background. Available styles include White, Black, and Green backgrounds to help visualize transparency.
Use the multiple background styles to view how the generated transparent video will appear in different environments.

If you're happy with the generated video, select the Download option to save it.

The video will be downloaded as a zipped file, which will contain two video assets:

  • Foreground video: This is the primary visual content featuring the subject with the background removed.
  • Alpha video: This video includes transparency data, also known as an alpha channel, which defines which parts of the foreground should be visible and which should be transparent.

Take these two files into your favorite video editing program to create the transparency you need for your project.
