Detect cuts in video clips

Last updated on Jul 17, 2026

Learn how to use the Detect cuts feature in Firefly video editor (beta) to identify cut points in a clip automatically.

Detect cuts analyzes your footage and automatically identifies cut points where camera angles, shots, or scenes change, and then splits it into separate segments at those points. This feature eliminates the need to check the frames one by one to identify and split the cuts.

In the timeline, select the clip in which you want to detect cuts.

Right-click the clip, and then select Detect cuts from the context menu. You'll get a message in the timeline once the detection is complete, and the original clip will appear as segments separated at the cut points.

Context menu displys a highlighted Split scenes option for automatically splitting a video clip into scenes.
Use Detect cuts in the timeline to speed up editing.

After the cuts are detected, you can edit, rearrange, trim, or apply effects to each cut independently, as needed.

Note

Detect cuts works best on videos with clear visual changes between shots. For shot transitions that are not obvious and for those with gradual camera movements, you may need to split additional segments manually using the Split tool.
