Specify playback speed

Last updated on Oct 27, 2025

Learn how to specify playback speed in Adobe Illustrator to customize the speed of the action based on user preference.

You can adjust an action’s playback speed or pause it to debug an action.

Select Playback Options from the Actions panel menu.

Select any of the following options to specify a speed from the Performance section.

  • Accelerated: The default option that plays the action at normal speed.
  • Step By Step: Completes each command and redraws the image before going on to the next command in the action.
  • Pause For: Specifies the amount of time the application should pause between carrying out each command in the action.
The Playback Options dialog box displays the highlighted options under the Performance section.
Apply playback speed by selecting the performance options from the Playback Options dialog box.

Note

When you play an action at an accelerated speed, the screen may not update as the action executes, files may be opened, modified, saved, and closed without ever appearing on‑screen, enabling the action to execute more quickly. If you want to see the files on‑screen as the action executes, specify the Step By Step speed instead.
