Last updated on Aug 6, 2026

Use automatic speech detection to generate and style captions for your videos in Adobe Firefly using the Firefly video editor (beta).

Use the Captions panel to automatically generate captions from your video's spoken dialogue in Firefly video editor (beta). The video editor detects speech and creates synchronized captions that you can style and position to match your video's layout.

After generating captions, you can apply different visual styles and adjust their position to ensure they complement your video's composition.

Add captions

Select Captions from the left toolbar.

The Captions icon is highlighted in the left toolbar, and the Captions panel displays an inactive toggle.
Switch on the Captions toggle to generate auto-synced captions for your video.

Turn on the Captions toggle or select Create captions to generate captions from the speech in your video and wait for the captions to finish loading.

Once the captions are loaded, hover over the available caption styles to preview and choose the preferred captions.

Select a preferred style to apply it and preview the caption style in the Viewer.

The Captions panel displays caption styles, and the Apply “Bright” style button is highlighted.
Choose a caption style that best matches the composition of your video.

Tip

If you’re not sure about the style chosen, select the reset icon to begin again.

To correct or edit the captions, go to the Text-based editing panel and edit the transcript.

After applying a style, the captions appear in the Viewer with the selected formatting. You can further customize their placement and color to ensure they don't cover important visual elements.

Adjust caption properties

Select a caption in the Viewer to display the reposition handle below it.

Drag the reposition handle to move the caption to a different location in the frame.

A caption is selected in the Viewer with the reposition handle highlighted.
Reposition and recolor the captions using the Properties panel.

For precise adjustments, use the Position controls in the Properties panel. Change the value of X for horizontal and Y for vertical adjustment.

You can also change the font and font style of the text from the dropdown menu in the Properties panel.

The Properties panel displays drop-down menus for selecting the font and font style of the selected text.
Use the drop-down menus to change the font and font style.

Go to the Fill option and select a color to change the font color for the caption.

  • Select the dropper icon to pick a color from the screen.
  • Select Swatch to use predefined colors.
  • Select Custom for custom colors.

Go to the Background option to change the background color of your chosen style. Select a preferred color using the dropper icon or the Swatch and Custom menu options.

Once you've positioned and styled your captions, you can export the video with the applied captions or just export the .srt file from the Text-based editing panel.
