Error 177 causes installation failure

Last updated on 18 Dec 2025

Learn how to resolve error code 177 "The installation path selected is too long" during Adobe app installation.

Error code 177 appears when the chosen installation folder contains a long or complex file path that the installer cannot read.

The installer can’t read the selected install location

To resolve the error, change the install location to a shorter folder path in the Creative Cloud desktop app.

Select the Account icon in the upper-right corner and choose Preferences.

The Account menu shows options such as Preferences, Sign out, and monthly generative credits for Gen AI features.
Access your app settings and set your preferences.

Select Apps from the left panel.

Adobe Creative Cloud preferences panel open on the “Apps” tab, showing options for auto-update, install location, and bandwidth use.
You can manage app preferences, such as auto-update, install location, and bandwidth usage, from the Apps section.

Select the edit icon   next to the Install location and choose a shorter path for installing your Creative Cloud apps.

For example, use C:\Adobe instead of a long path such as C:\Users\YourName\Documents\Work Files\2025\Adobe Creative Cloud\Programs.

Adobe Creative Cloud preferences panel open on the “Apps” tab, highlighting the “Installing” section where users can set the default install location.
Change the default installation location for your Creative Cloud apps.

Select Done to save your changes.

Install the app again.

Your app should now install successfully using the updated location. If the issue persists, review your installation logs to identify the specific fatal error causing the failure.
