Effects and transitions reorganization

Last updated on Feb 19, 2026

Learn about the reorganization of effects and transitions in Adobe Premiere version 26.0.

The Effects panel has been reorganized into more logical, task-based categories for both effects and transitions. Categories such as Blur & Sharpen, Color Correction, Distort, Generate, Stylize, and Transform make it easier to browse and discover effects.

You may notice that some effects have moved to new categories. For example, Invert is now under Image Control, and Offset lives under Transform. These changes are intended to improve consistency and make effects easier to browse.

Modern replacements with familiar names

Many commonly used effects and transitions now use modern, GPU-accelerated versions with greater creative flexibility. These updates are enabled by the addition of over 90 effects and transitions formerly provided by Film Impact. For example:

  • Cross Dissolve
  • Film Dissolve
  • Dip to Black
  • Dip to White

The older versions of these effects are still available in the Legacy folder if you need them.

For a complete list of changes, refer to the full effects and transitions table.

Default transition update

Cross Dissolve is now powered by a modern dissolve from Film Impact. The old Cross Dissolve has been renamed Cross Dissolve (Legacy) and moved to the Legacy folder. All instances of the Cross Dissolve effect in the existing projects will not be automatically updated to the new version to maintain rendering consistency when opening old projects. If you’ve customized your default transition, your preference is respected and unchanged.

Legacy and Obsolete effects and transitions

What “Legacy” means

Some older effects and transitions, with more modern replacements, are grouped in the Legacy section of the Effects panel. They are preserved to support compatibility with old projects, but they are not the recommended choice for new work.

What “Obsolete” means

Some very old effects and transitions are now classified as Obsolete and are hidden to prevent accidental use. They are not visible in the Effects panel and cannot be applied to new projects, but they will continue to render in old projects.

For a complete list of legacy and obsolete effects, refer to the full effects and transitions table.

What this means for your existing projects

  • Existing projects open and render normally with no change to your applied effects.
  • Legacy and Obsolete effects continue to work.

What this means for new projects

  • You’ll see clearer categories and modern defaults.
  • Legacy effects are available but clearly labeled.
  • Obsolete effects are hidden.

Permanent removal of effects

After an effect is classified as Obsolete, its usage is monitored. Some effects may be removed entirely in a future release. Removed effects will no longer render if used in new or existing projects.

Tip

Avoid using Legacy and Obsolete effects in new workflows.
