Edit in Trim mode

Last updated on Apr 1, 2026

Learn how to use Trim mode to adjust edits with precision by trimming or rolling clips in Adobe Premiere.

Trim mode gives you detailed control over edits by showing both sides of a cut. Whether you want to fine-tune a single clip or adjust multiple clips at once, Trim mode provides the tools you need to make frame-accurate adjustments quickly and efficiently.

Before you begin:

Enter Trim mode by selecting the Program or Timeline panel and pressing Shift + T.

In the Program Monitor, move the cursor slowly across the boundary between two clips.

As you drag from left to right, the tool icon changes from Trim Out (left side) to Roll (center) to Trim In (right side).

Drag between the clips to perform a roll edit, adjusting both clips simultaneously.

To trim in or out, move the cursor toward the left or right edge of a clip until the yellow trim icon appears, then drag inward or outward.

Tip

Use modifier keys to refine trims:

  • Press Alt (Windows) or Option (macOS) to temporarily unlink audio and video, making it easier to trim just one portion of a clip.
  • Press Shift to select multiple edit points, allowing you to trim several tracks or clips at once. Wherever you see a trim “handle,” adjustments apply to all selected clips. Combine these keys to make advanced trimming selections.
