Learn how to use the Rate Stretch Tool to speed up or slow down your video in Adobe Premiere Pro.

The Rate Stretch Tool lets you quickly change the duration of a clip in the Timeline while simultaneously changing the clip's speed to fit the duration.

For example, if you have a gap in your sequence of a specific length, and you want to fill that gap with some speed-altered media, the Rate Stretch Tool allows you to stretch or compress the speed to the percentage needed.

Before you begin

Launch Premiere Pro and create a new project. Import your selected media to the Timeline panel.

  1. Select the Rate Stretch Tool  from the Tools panel.
  2. Drag either edge of a clip in a Timeline panel to stretch or compress the speed of the selected clip.

Rate Stretch Tool allows you to stretch or compress the speed of any selected clip.

Result

Rate Stretch Tool fills any gaps in your sequence with speed-altered media.
