Create Watched Folders in Acrobat Pro

Last updated on Aug 16, 2025

Learn how to set up Watched Folders to convert PostScript files to PDFs using Acrobat Distiller automatically.

When you place a PostScript file in a Watched folder, Acrobat Distiller detects it, converts it to a PDF, and moves the new PDF to an output folder. These folders can be configured with specific security settings, conversion parameters, and file handling options for a customizable and automated approach to PDF creation from PostScript files.

In Acrobat Distiller, select Settings > Watched Folders.

Select Add Folder and select the target folder.

Distiller creates an In folder and an Out folder within the target folder.

To define security options for a folder, select the folder and select Edit Security.

Set the security preferences as needed and select OK.

Note

To revert a security preference applied to a folder, select the folder and select Clear Security.

To set Adobe PDF conversion settings for the watch folder, select the folder and then select Edit Settings.

Modify the preferences in the Adobe PDF Settings dialog box as needed and select OK. The settings are saved as folder.joboptions file in the watched folder.

To use pre-saved Adobe PDF Settings, select the folder and select Load Settings. Select the desired setting and select OK.

To remove a watched folder, select the folder and select Remove folder.

Note

Removing a watched folder does not delete the in and out folders or the folder.joboptions file from your system. You can delete them manually.

Select OK.
