Edit PDFs via chat not working in Acrobat
Learn how to troubleshoot issues when editing PDFs via chat in Acrobat AI Assistant.
Try it conversationally
Ask the AI Assistant to perform PDF tasks for you.
If a performed action to edit a PDF using the chat feature doesn't run as expected, it may be due to your subscription plan, the platform you are using, the file type, language settings, or how the prompt is phrased.
Quick checks:
- Make sure you are using Acrobat on desktop (for all users) or Acrobat on web (for individual users only), and your app language is set to English.
- Include specific details in your prompt, such as page numbers, file names, exact content references, or descriptions of what appears on the page, to help Acrobat identify the correct action. For example: "Delete pages with financial information."
If the issue persists, identify your scenario below and follow the steps to fix it.
Action is unavailable for the file type
Certain file states may prevent actions from running.
- Make sure the file is not password-protected or restricted. If it is, remove the protection first before running a conversational action.
- Make sure the file is not a scanned image without OCR applied. Run Scan & OCR on the file first, then retry your prompt.
- If the file is currently shared for review or signed, some editing actions may not be available.
Prompt is not recognized or returns unexpected results
If the AI Assistant does not understand your prompt or returns an unrelated response, the phrasing may be confusing, or the requested tool may not yet be supported conversationally.
- Rephrase your prompt using more specific language. For example, instead of "Fix the pages," try "Delete the last three pages" or "Rotate page 5 clockwise."
If you are referencing document content, be as descriptive as possible. For example, "Remove all pages that contain pricing information" rather than "Remove those pages." If the AI Assistant does not identify the correct pages, try using specific page numbers instead.
- If the AI Assistant responds with guided steps instead of executing the action directly, the tool may not yet support direct execution. Follow the steps provided to complete the task manually.
Action is unavailable in your language
Editing PDFs via chat is currently supported only in English. If your Acrobat app language is set to a non-English locale, the AI Assistant may not be able to execute PDF tasks.
Set the application language to English.
Restart Acrobat and retry your prompt.
