Asian, European, and Middle Eastern language support

Learn about working with PDFs in Asian, Cyrillic, and right-to-left scripts.

Asian language PDFs

You can use Acrobat to view, search, and print PDF documents that contain Asian text, such as:

  • Traditional and Simplified Chinese
  • Japanese
  • Korean

Install the necessary Asian language font packs to use these languages in Acrobat features, including filling in forms, adding comments, and digital signatures.

PDFMaker and the Adobe PDF printer automatically embed most Asian fonts in your file when creating PDFs. You can control these embedded Asian fonts.

In Windows, you can view and print files that contain Asian languages without the Asian language support installed on your system. If you open a PDF that needs unique fonts, Acrobat will ask you to install them.

Cyrillic, Central European, and Eastern European language PDFs

Acrobat lets you view, edit, and print PDFs with embedded fonts in the following texts:

  • Cyrillic text, including Bulgarian and Russian
  • Central European text
  • Eastern European text, including Czech, Hungarian, and Polish

These fonts don't need to be embedded to use the Search feature.

Note

If a PDF uses fonts for form fields or text boxes not installed on your computer, Acrobat will automatically prompt you to download the missing fonts when you check for updates.

Hebrew, Arabic, Thai, and Vietnamese language PDFs

Acrobat supports Thai and Vietnamese text. In Windows, Acrobat supports Arabic and Hebrew.

Right-to-left languages

You can use the right-to-left language options in Acrobat to display the user interface elements for controlling paragraph direction, digit style, and ligature. When this option is selected, you can specify the writing direction (left-to-right or right-to-left) and type of digits (Western or Arabic-Indic) used to create and fill out specific form fields, add digital signatures, and make text box markups.
