Adjust gain in audio

Last updated on Jun 24, 2025

Learn how to adjust audio gain in Adobe Premiere Pro to control the overall volume of an audio clip, helping you achieve the desired sound level for your project.

Gain amplifies an audio signal and is measured in decibels (dB). In audio editing, gain is often used to adjust the input level of an audio clip or track. Increasing the gain amplifies the audio, making it stronger and potentially louder. Decreasing the gain attenuates the audio, making it weaker and quieter.

Fundamental tool in audio processing, gain adjustments can correct recording levels, optimize the signal-to-noise ratio, or match audio levels between different clips or tracks.

  1. Select a clip or multiple clips in the Timeline panel.

  2. Right-click and select Audio Gain from the context menu.

  3. In the Audio Gain dialog box, Premiere Pro automatically calculates the peak amplitude of the selected clips. This value is displayed in the Peak Amplitude field. Once calculated, this value is stored for the selection. You can use this value as a guide to adjust gain.

  4. Select one of the following options and set its value:

    • Set Gain to: The default value is 0.0 dB. You can set the gain to a specific value. This value is always updated to the current gain, even when the option isn't selected, and the value appears dimmed.
    • Adjust Gain by: The default value is 0.0 dB. You can adjust the gain by + or - dB. Entering a value other than zero in this field automatically updates the Set Gain to dB value to reflect the actual gain value applied to the clip.
    • Normalize Max Peak to: The default value is 0.0 dB, but you can set it to any value below 0.0 dB. This option adjusts the maximum peak amplitude in the selected clips to the user-specified value.
    • Normalize All Peaks to: The default value is 0.0 dB, but you can set it to anything below 0.0 dB. This normalization option adjusts the peak amplitude in the selected clips to the user-specified value.
