Double-click an asset in the Project panel to open it in the Source Monitor.
When an asset is opened in the Source Monitor, you can see the source patch indicators on the timeline indicating the track that is selected for patching.
This feature is particularly useful when working with multiple video or audio tracks. It enables you to select and edit specific tracks without affecting others, providing greater control over the editing process and ensuring that changes are made only to the intended tracks.
Create a project and import media. Switch to the Editing workspace (Window > Workspaces > Editing). Make sure the Source Monitor is displayed (Window > Source Monitor).
Double-click an asset in the Project panel to open it in the Source Monitor.

Select the Mark In and Mark Out points in the Source Monitor to select the clip you want to source patch.
(Optional) If needed, you can change the track you want to select for patching by moving the source patch indicator to the track.
Play back the video in the Source Monitor. Select the Mark In and Mark Out points in the Source Monitor to select the clip you want to source patch. You can also use the I and O keyboard shortcuts.
To insert the clip, do one of the following:
When you add a clip to the sequence using an Insert edit, the clips later in time shift ahead to accommodate the new clip. You can also press Ctrl (Win) or Command (macOS) to enter Insert mode while dragging a clip.
To overwrite an existing clip on the timeline, select Overwrite from the Source Monitor and select the desired track to overwrite the clip. You can also use a period (.) to overwrite a clip.
An Overwrite edit adds a clip by replacing existing frames in a sequence that extends from the edit point for the clip’s duration. When adding clips to sequences or rearranging clips inside sequences, the Overwrite approach is the default.
