Reconnect full-resolution media to proxies

Last updated on Jun 23, 2025

When editing with proxy files, reconnect the full-resolution media before exporting or performing high-quality post-production tasks.

If you plan to do a lot of color correction, add complex effects, or compositing, or audio mixing, it is better to reconnect full resolution files to make sure you are working with the best source material for these tasks.

Before you begin

Complete all your timeline editing tasks using proxies. When attempting to reconnect full-resolution media, keep in mind that you can attach reconnect full-resolution media only for video-only, audio/video, and offline proxy clips in the Project panel. Other file types (for example, audio-only, still images, or image sequences) are not supported.

  1. In the Project panel, select the high-resolution media clips that you want to associate with proxy files. You can select multiple clips by pressing Ctrl (Windows) or Command (macOS) while selecting them.

  2. Select Proxy > Reconnect Full Resolution Media.

The Reconnect Full Resolution Media dialog box opens, which is identical to the Attach Proxies dialog, except that it attaches full resolution clips.

The Reconnect Full Resolution Media dialog box is open, which is identical to the Attach Proxies dialog, except that it attaches full resolution clips.
Use Reconnect Full Resolution Media to relink missing high-resolution files by selecting matching properties, which will help Premiere locate them accurately.

  3. Select the file properties you want to match.

Premiere Pro uses a combination of criteria to match files, which include file names, file extensions, tape names, and timecode. If it finds a match between a high-resolution clip and a proxy file based on these criteria, it will link them together.

  4. Select Relink others automatically if you want Premiere Pro to search for and attach proxies to any other media clips in your project that match the properties of the ones you're currently working with.

  5. Select Use Media Browser to attach files if you want to use the Media Browser in Premiere Pro to navigate to the corresponding full resolution clip.

  6. Select Attach.

  7. In the Media Browser, search for and select the correct clip.

  8. Select OK.

You can now work with the full resolution files – doing further edits and readying them for export.
