Customize the Icon View in Project panel

Learn how to customize Icon View in the Project panel to organize and preview clips as thumbnails for easier browsing and editing.

The panel shows media as thumbnails in Icon View, with a highlighted icon that lets users arrange and preview clips visually.
Use the view mode icons to change how your media is displayed and organize clips visually for faster navigation.

You can perform the following actions with your assets in icon View:

  1. To increase or decrease the size of icons, use the Zoom slider. Icons can be zoomed to a large scale so that you can view the contents of your media more easily.

  2. To set a poster frame for the icon, drag the playhead or shuttle to the desired frame, and then press the Shift + P (Windows) or Command + P (macOS) keys. To clear the poster frame, press the Ctrl + Shift + P (Windows) or Option + P (macOS) keys.

  3. To view if the clip has been used in a sequence, hover over the filmstrip icon with the mouse and view the tool tip. The indicator also shows how many times the clip is used in the sequence.

  4. To locate the clip in a sequence, select the filmstrip icon and choose the sequence and sequence location (in timecode) from the context menu. The playhead jumps to the clip in the proper sequence.

  5. To arrange items in Icon View, drag a different location in the grid. As you drag, a vertical bar indicates where the item will be located. If you drag an item to a bin, the item goes into the bin.

To scrub through the contents of a clip, do one of the following:

  1. Hover your cursor over a clip thumbnail to scrub through its content without clicking — this is called Hover Scrub. Scrub left to right to preview from the Media Start (left) to the Media End (right).

    Tip:

Moving your cursor away or switching focus resets the thumbnail to its poster frame. Hover Scrub does not play audio.

    • Turn off Hover Scrub using the Project panel menu or by pressing Shift + H.
    • Temporarily enable Hover Scrub by holding Shift when it’s turned off.
    • Set In and Out points while hover scrubbing by pressing I and O.
    • Double-click the icon while hovering over a clip to load it into the Source Monitor at the hovered frame, allowing quick insert or overwrite edits to the timeline.
  2. Click and drag the playhead across the slider to scrub the clip.

    • After clicking the slider on the thumbnail, a clip playhead appears.
    • Drag the playhead to view clip contents or monitor audio.
    • Press J, K, or L to shuttle backward, pause, or play forward through the clip.
    • Press I and O to set In and Out points while paused or shuttling; a yellow bar appears to indicate the marked section.
Note:

If you are using a MacBook Pro, you can pinch and zoom the Multi-Touch trackpad to resize thumbnails in the Project panel and Media Browser.

You can use Icon View to arrange clips in storyboard order, and then use the Automate To Sequence feature to move the storyboard into a sequence.

Sort icons in the Icon View

  1. To sort icons in the Icon View, click the Sort Icons icon in the Project panel. A list of sort options appears:

    • User Order: Sort icons manually by dragging them into any order you want.
    • List View Sort: Sort icons based on the chosen sort order set in List View—for example, sorting by Media Duration in List View will carry over when you switch to the Icon View.
    • Metadata Sort: Sort icons using common metadata fields like Name, Label, or Media Type, and choose ascending or descending order.
The panel displays a drop-down menu from the Project panel, showing options to sort clips in Icon View using manual order, list view settings, or metadata fields.
