View or make changes in the History panel

Learn how to use the History panel in Adobe Premiere Pro to view and manage your recent editing actions.

The History panel in Adobe Premiere Pro allows you to track and manage your editing actions within the current project by providing a visual timeline of the actions you've taken.

Before you begin

Open a project in Premiere Pro and start editing.

Guidelines for using the History panel

  • The History panel keeps track of states and actions.
  • An action refers to a specific operation or change that you perform in your Premiere Pro project. This can include actions such as cutting a clip, applying an effect, moving a clip on the timeline, adjusting the volume, and so on. Each time you perform an action, it's recorded in the History panel.
  • A state represents the overall condition or configuration of your project at a specific point in time. It encompasses all the actions that have been performed up to that point. Each time you perform a series of actions, Premiere Pro creates a new state in the history list to represent the project's state at that moment.
  • Program-wide changes, such as changes to panels, windows, and preferences, are not changes to the project itself and are not included in the History panel.
  • After you close and reopen a project, the previous actions are no longer available in the History panel.

View or make changes

  1. Select Window > History.

The History panel opens with a list of all the actions you have done in Premiere Pro in the current session. The oldest action is at the top of the list, and the most recent one is at the bottom. Each action is listed with the name of the tool or command used to change the project and an icon representing that tool or command. Some actions generate a state for each panel affected by the action. Actions you perform in such a panel are treated as a single state in the History panel.

  2. Navigate in the History panel by dragging the panel's slider up or down.

  3. To undo an action, select it in the History panel. All states and actions below are dimmed, and Premiere Pro reverts the project to the state just before the action occurred.

  4. To redo an action, select the dimmed action in the History panel, and Premiere Pro reverts the project up to that action.

  5. To delete an action, select the action, and then select Delete Redoable Actions and select OK. Doing this deletes the action and those that come after it. The project reverts to the state before the deleted action.

  6. To clear all actions from the History panel, select and then select Clear History.
