Create fade-in video effects

Last updated on Jun 23, 2025

Learn how to fade in a video clip or start it by fading up from black at the beginning.

  1. Select a clip in the Timeline panel.

  2. Open the Effects panel, search for the Dissolve effects, then drag and drop the chosen effect onto the beginning of the clip to apply it.

From the Effects panel, the Cross Dissolve transition is selected under the Video Transitions section, with timeline displaying the transition applied to a video clip.
Choose a dissolve effect and simply drag and drop it onto the beginning of the clip to apply it.

  3. Alternatively, you can also go to Effect Controls panel, use the Opacity property of the clip and add keyframes to start at 0 and increase to 100%.

The Effect Controls panel has the Opacity property selected and control set to 100% for a sample video clip.
Select the stopwatch icon next to Opacity to activate keyframing, then adjust the opacity values to animate the clip.
