Learn how to convert interlaced clips to non-interlaced ones or adjust the field order to match your project's requirements.

Consider the following before you decide to change the field order of a clip:

  • If you're unsure about the correct field order, consult your camera's documentation or check the metadata of your source footage.
  • Changing the field order can affect the visual quality of your footage. Preview the results to ensure the change improves your video's appearance.

Import your source footage into your Premiere Pro project.

  1. In the Project panel, right-click (Windows) or Control-click (macOS) the clip(s) you want to modify.

  2. Select Modify > Interpret Footage from the context menu.

  3. In the Interpret Footage dialog box, locate the Field Order section. The Use Field Order from File option indicates whether the clip is interlaced or non-interlaced.

The Interpret Footage tab in the Modify Clip dialog box is open. The Upper field first in Use Field Order from File is selected so that Premiere Pro treats the footage as upper-field-first, overriding metadata.
When Upper Field First option is enabled, Premiere Pro treats the footage as upper-field-first, overriding metadata.

  4. To change the field order, select one of the following options from the Conform to dropdown menu:

    • No Fields (Progressive Scan): Select this option to change an interlaced clip to a non-interlaced one.
    • Upper Field First: Select this option for odd-numbered lines.
    • Lower Field First: Select this option for even-numbered lines.
  5. Select OK to apply the change.
