Upload media to Frame.io

Learn how to upload media to the Frame.io panel in Premiere Pro and After Effects to share your work and get feedback from your team.

Note:

This article shows resources related to the Review with Frame.io (Legacy) panel for Premiere Pro. If you’re using Frame.io Version 4 (V4), note that:

  • Frame.io V4 accounts are not compatible with this panel.
  • To use the new Frame.io V4 Comments panel in Premiere Pro 25.2 or later, go to Window > Frame.io > Frame.io V4 Comments
  • For users of Premiere Pro v25.2 and later looking to use the Frame.io (Legacy) panel, the extension can now be found under Window > Frame.io > Frame.io (Legacy).

Frame.io supports a wide range of file types, including standard video, image, audio, and PDF types. Any file uploaded to a project can be viewed and reviewed, provided it’s in a supported format.

Frame.io uses an accelerated file uploader to upload large media files without compression. It encodes the files into H.264 videos for smooth playback on the web while keeping the original file available for download.

Before you begin

Upload media in Premiere Pro

  1. Select Window > Workspaces > Review to open the Frame.io panel.

  2. Log in to your Frame.io account.

  3. Select Upload > Active Sequence to upload an active sequence you are working on to Frame.io.

    Choose the Active Sequence option to upload an active sequence that you are currently working on to Frame.io.

    Note:

    If you’re using the Frame.io web app, upload your media by dragging and dropping the file or folder anywhere onto the project.

Upload media in After Effects

  1. Select Window > Workspaces > Review to open the Frame.io panel.

  2. Log in to your Frame.io account.

  3. Select Upload.

    Select Upload > Active Comp (or any other option) in the Frame.io panel.

  4. Select Active Comp to upload selected comps from the Timeline panel or  Queued Comps to upload compositions queued for render in the Render Queue.

  5. Enter the following details and select Upload.

    Use the Upload Sequence dialog box to specify the details of the file that is being uploaded.

    • Name: Specify what the file should be called in Frame.io.
    • Preset: Select the render preset to use.
    • Range: Select whether to export the whole sequence or just the portion between the In and Out points.
    • Render to: Specify where the exported file should be saved on the disk.
    • Export markers at comments: Turn timeline markers into Frame.io comments when uploaded.

Upload Active Sequence and Active Comp

With the Active Sequence option in Premiere Pro or the Active Comp and Queued Comps options in After Effects, you can render and upload the Timeline directly into Frame.io for sharing without leaving the app.

  1. Select Window > Workspaces > Review to open the Frame.io panel.

  2. Log in to your Frame.io account.

  3. Select Upload > Active Sequence on the Frame.io panel in Premiere Pro or Active Comp or Queued Comps in After Effects.

  4. Enter the following details and select Upload.

    • Name: Specify what the file should be called in Frame.io.
    • Preset: Select the render preset to use.
    • Range: Select whether to export the whole sequence or only the portion between the In and Out points.
    • Render to: Specify where the exported file should be saved on the disk.
    • Export markers at comments: Turn timeline markers into Frame.io comments when uploaded.
    • Keep rendered file: Retain the exported file on the disk at the location specified in the Render to field. Unchecking this option deletes the files once the upload is complete.
    • Auto-version: Add new versions of a sequence to a Frame.io version stack.
  5. After the upload is complete, Frame.io instantly creates hover scrubs for videos and thumbnails for still images. Non-media file types are identified with a file icon.

When you use Active Sequence in Premiere Pro or Active Comp in After Effects, Frame.io automatically retains the folder structure.
