Overview of Text-Based editing

Last updated on Jun 23, 2025

Learn how to create a rough cut or edit a video as easily as copying and pasting text.

Use Text-Based Editing to create and edit video sequences using a transcript of the video. When you select and rearrange the text, related video clips are automatically trimmed and adjusted in the timeline without losing the context. You can view the corresponding changes in the visuals. The transcript includes timecode metadata and syncs dynamically with clips on the timeline.

The Program Monitor has a video clip and displays multiple video and audio tracks in the timeline. The Transcript tab has text with timecodes.
Cut, copy, and paste text in the sequence transcript, and the edits automatically reflect in the timeline.

Key features

  • Auto-transcribe your source footage: Auto-generate a transcript of your video with Text-Based Editing, aligning dialogue with timecodes to simplify editing. Quickly navigate, search, and select clips directly from the transcript. You can only transcribe videos with spoken dialogue. If you don’t need to transcribe all your source media, import media normally and transcribe individual files as needed.
  • Rough-cut your videos according to the text: Select, cut, and rearrange text from a transcript to create video sequences. As you edit the text, this feature automatically trims and places matching video clips in the timeline, making the editing process efficient and intuitive.
  • Edit precisely: Refine the cuts directly on the timeline. Fine-tune clip timing and transitions, and adjust your video clips to match the timing of the spoken words perfectly. This ensures that the visual and audio elements are in sync. Text-Based Editing allows you to perform three-point edits to build a sequence on the timeline.
  • Cost-effective: Access the Text-Based Editing feature for free, included with your subscription.
  • Generate accurate transcripts: Experience industry-standard and dependable results, often requiring minimal manual adjustments. Premiere Pro uses Adobe Sensei's AI for precise auto-transcription of dialogue.
  • Manage filler words and speaker dialogue: Detect and bulk-delete filler words like uh and umm from the transcripts. Filter the dialogue of a specific speaker in the transcript and delete it from the video.

Use dialogue recordings with clear audio and minimal background noise for best results in Text-Based Editing.
