Render a section of a sequence

Last updated on Jun 24, 2025

Rendering a section of your timeline helps ensure smoother playback, especially for complex edits or effects-heavy areas.

Note:

Position the pointer over the work area bar to display a tool tip that shows the work area bar's start timecode, end timecode, and duration.

  1. Identify unrendered sections:

Premiere Pro uses colored bars above the timeline to indicate rendering status:

    • Red bar: Unrendered section that likely won’t play back smoothly.
    • Yellow bar: Unrendered, but may still play back in real time.
    • Green bar: Already rendered and ready for smooth playback.
  2. Define the section to render:

    • Move the playhead to where you want the render to start and press I (In point).
    • Move the playhead to where you want it to end and press O (Out point).
  3. Select Sequence, and one of the following options:

    • Render Effects In to Out: Renders the sections of the video tracks lying within the In and Out points, containing a red render bar. Alternatively, use Enter.
    • Render In to Out: Renders the sections of the video tracks lying within the In and Out points, containing either a red render bar or a yellow render bar.
    • Render Audio: Renders a preview file for the sections of the audio tracks lying within the work area.

By setting this audio preference (Render audio when rendering video), you can set Premiere Pro to render the audio tracks whenever you render the video tracks.

  4. To maximize the quality of motion in rendered preview files, select the Maximum Render Quality option in Sequence Settings.
