Replace rendered clips with original media

Last updated on Jun 23, 2025

Learn how to undo a render applied to improve playback performance and restore a clip to its original, unrendered state.

After rendering and replacing a clip in your sequence, you can revert to the original unrendered clip or After Effects composition at any point.

  1. Select the sequence containing the rendered clips in the timeline.

  2. Select Clip > Restore Unrendered.

Note:

If changes are made to the original file while the rendered and replaced clips are being used, reverting to the original clips includes those changes.
