Storage recommendations

Last updated on Jun 23, 2025

Use fast SSD or NVMe storage and configure drives efficiently to enhance your video editing performance.

Local storage setup

Ensure your hard disk has at least 8GB of free space for installation. You'll need additional space during setup and cannot install the program on removable flash storage. For smooth performance, use a high-speed drive for media files.

Configuration tips

System drive

To install the OS and apps.

Use a high-speed SSD for fast boot and app launch.

Media cache drive

To store peak (PEK) and conform audio (CFA) files that Premiere Pro accesses thousands of times per second.

Assign a separate SSD for smooth playback and responsiveness.

Media Drive

To store video assets and project media.

Use a high-speed NVMe SSD for smooth editing.

Note:

Use fast external drives for media and media cache. If you have only two drives, store both Media Cache and media on the same one.

Best practices for storage management

  • Use dedicated drives: Assign separate drives for system, cache, and media to maximize speed.
  • Prioritize fast storage: Fast SSD or NVMe storage is essential for video production. Spinning disks lack HD and UHD video speed without a RAID setup.
  • Optimize external storage: Use fast external drives if internal storage is limited.
  • Ensure High-Speed network: Maintain a 10Gbps + connection for smooth NAS performance in Premiere Pro and After Effects.
Maintain a 1 Gbps Ethernet connection for HD workflows and 10 Gbps for 4K shared network workflows in Premiere Pro and After Effects.
  • Store cache locally: Keep Media Cache on local drives for better responsiveness in shared environments.
