Learn about guidelines for managing Premiere Pro updates.

Tips for Managing Premiere Pro Updates

To avoid disruptions, don’t update Premiere Pro during major projects—wait until you're between projects. Use the Creative Cloud Desktop app to disable auto-updates and control when updates occur.

Understand product updates

  • Adobe schedules around six updates for Premiere Pro every year, usually with dot releases like 25.1 or 25.2.
  • Adobe also releases one major update yearly with a new version number, like 24.x or 25.x.
  • Premiere Pro updates with the same version number are compatible. A project saved in Premiere Pro 24.6 can be opened by Premiere Pro 24.0 or any other 24.x version.

Scheduled updates: Recommended maintenance

Dot release updates are a great time to do your Premiere Pro housekeeping. This includes checking your system drivers (one of the most common causes of performance issues), clearing and rebuilding your media cache.

Major releases: Recommended maintenance

We recommend performing complete maintenance when you update to a new major release, like 24.6 to 25.0.

  • Perform the scheduled updates.
  • Check your third-party plugins.
  • Also, ensure all your third-party plugins are up to date, as using outdated plugins can cause problems.
  • Backup your settings, customizations, preferences, keyboard shortcuts, and workspace layouts so you won’t lose your personalized setup.
