Tone mapping in Premiere Pro

Last updated on Jun 23, 2025

Learn about tone mapping for HDR (High Dynamic Range) video to SDR (Standard Dynamic Range) video workflows in Adobe Premiere Pro.

Automatic tone mapping makes it easy to work with different types of footage and different color spaces in the same sequence. Mix and match camera media, from Log footage to iPhone HLG and other HDR formats in Rec. 709 (Standard Dynamic Range) sequences, while retaining consistent colors. With automatic tone mapping, there’s no more risk of clipping your highlights.

Premiere Pro automatically adjusts wide color gamuts to display accurately in your sequence without blown-out highlights. Tone mapping is enabled by default, so iPhone or HDR footage will display correctly.

HDR footage in the Program Monitor looks blown out in a standard sequence.
HDR footage, such as iPhone HLG video, looks blown out in a standard sequence.

Tone mapping works with HDR video, like iPhone HLG, as well as other HLG and PQ formats. It also supports log video, including Sony S-Log, Canon C-Log, and Panasonic V-Log.

Automatic tone mapping applied to the HDR footage shows balanced colors and contrast.
Automatic tone mapping recalculates the HDR color values so that they display consistently in the narrow Rec. 709 color space.
